Why Study Computer Science at Wilkes?

As a Wilkes computer science student, you’ll enjoy small class sizes, the freedom to conduct independent study and research with dedicated faculty, and opportunities to solve real-world problems.

What Will You Learn as a Computer Science Major?

  • A series of foundational computer science and mathematics courses in data structures, algorithms, and parallel and distributed computing provide a strong base of theoretical and practical knowledge you'll use every day.
  • Advanced electives build on what you've learned, diving into topics such as networking and communication, security, machine learning and artificial intelligence.
  • In addition to technical expertise, you'll prepare for a successful career by learning to effectively work within a team and become familiar best practices within a professional, legal and ethical framework. Select students gain practical experience working as system administrators for the department, managing our computing facilities.
  • A senior capstone project brings it all together. You'll have the opportunity to leverage everything you've learned as you work on a project team under the direction of a faculty member solving actual problems. Capstone projects are often developed with alumni supervision, giving you additional opportunities to make lasting connections and expand your network.

Program Highlights

Senior Project

For your senior project, you’ll design and implement software as part of a team and present it at the end of your last semester. Examples of past senior projects include iOS robotics drivers, AI chess engines, mobile and web apps to improve and automate university workflows, and applications that support faculty research.

Internships

The CS program allows flexibility for internships and cooperative education. Students have interned at Google, NASA, Intel and many more. The credit-bearing cooperative education component includes placement in a private or public organization related to your academic objectives and career goals.

Facilities

Hands-on, experiential learning takes place in our computer labs, which house over two dozen workstations with quad-core Intel i7 processors running GNU/Linux. Our WARLOC computing cluster offers massive computing power and data analysis capabilities at scale.
