Why Study Mathematics at Wilkes?

The mathematics department at Wilkes is small, and so are the classes. The focus is mentorship, with faculty working one-on-one with you to determine your career goals and to focus on mathematical areas of interest to you.

The Wilkes mathematics program gives you the option of three different tracks to pursue. The standard track will prepare you for graduate study, research and careers in industry or government; the computational track is if you have an interest in computer science; and teacher certification prepares you to teach mathematics in secondary school. All three tracks share a common core of study in discrete mathematics, analysis, probability, and statistics.

What Will You Learn as a Mathematics Student?

  • You will learn the basics of analysis, including single-variable and multi-variable calculus and introductory differential equations, probability and statistics, linear algebra and abstract algebra.
  • Additional course offerings are available in statistics and actuarial science, applied mathematics, topology, and numerical methods.
  • Topics courses are available based upon areas of interest.

Program Highlights

Internships

Gain practical experience through an internship. A recent graduate interned as a mathematics aide analyzing data at the Aberdeen Test Center in Aberdeen, Maryland. The Office of Institutional Research at Wilkes University has also employed interns, with duties that included representation and analysis of survey data.

Research and Tutoring

As a math major, you’ll work with faculty on small group projects of interests as well as provide academic support, through tutoring or small group supplemental instruction, to students who need assistance. These services are in high demand and will provide you with invaluable experience.

Cocurricular

Wilkes University is the host of the annual Association for Computing Machinery International Collegiate Programming Contest, and has an active Math and Computer Science Club.

The mathematics program offers a unique blend of pure and applied mathematics and computer science. The professors take pride in providing one-on-one mentorship and research opportunities.
