You can apply to the Spark Scholars program starting the summer before your junior
year of high school and continue taking courses until you graduate high school. To
qualify, you’ll need a GPA of 3.0 (85) or higher.
How do I apply and what do I need to submit?
You can apply online at or by following the application instructions on the Spark
Scholars webpage.
When you apply, you’ll need to upload an unofficial copy of your high school transcript. A clear screenshot is fine, it just needs to include
your full name and cumulative GPA.
When is the deadline to apply?
Deadlines vary each semester, so it’s best to apply early! That way, you can take
advantage of priority registration.
Applications for Intersession and Spring courses open in March.
Applications for Summer and Fall courses open in October.
Do I need permission from my high school to participate?
Since every high school handles dual enrollment a little differently, check in with
your guidance counselor to see if your school has a specific dual enrollment process
or time frame. If not, no problem! You can still take classes online (when available)
or outside of your regular school hours.
I was a Spark Scholar in the past, do I need to reapply?
Yes, please! In order to keep our records as current as possible, we ask that you
submit an updated application and updated unofficial transcript for each semester
in which you intend to take courses.
Do I have to take certain prerequisites before enrolling in classes?
Some courses have prerequisites, meaning you’ll need to take another class first.
If you’re not sure about a specific course, reach out to your Spark Scholars coordinator
and they’ll help you confirm what you’re eligible to take.
When does registration take place for Spark Scholars?
One of the best perks of being a Spark Scholar is priority registration! That’s why
we encourage you to apply early each semester.
Registration for Intersession & Spring courses typical occurs around late October.
Registration for Summer & Fall courses typically occurs around late March.
How do I register for classes?
Once your application is approved, you’ll get an email with a list of available courses. To
register, email your coordinator with the CRN (course reference number) for the class(es)
you want.
Tip: Include a back-up course and CRN just in case your first choice fills up!
How many classes or credits can I take each semester?
Spark Scholars are eligible to take up to 2 courses per semester, and no more than
1 course over Winter Intersession.
Will these credits transfer to other colleges and universities?
Most of the courses you are eligible to take as a Spark Scholar are highly transferable,
but every college has its own transfer policies. If you want to be sure your credits
will count elsewhere, check with the admissions office at the college you’re planning
to attend.
How much does it cost to take a class through Spark Scholars?
Spark Scholars courses are offered at the discounted rate of $50/credit. Most courses
are 3 credits.
Are there extra fees for books, labs or materials?
You’ll be responsible for the cost of textbooks and any course-specific fees (like
lab fees or art supplies). Instructions for how to obtain your books from the Barnes
& Noble website will be sent via email.
How do I pay for my classes?
Once you’re registered, you’ll receive billing information by email. You can pay online
through the Wilkes billing portal or in person at the Bursar’s Office.
Is financial aid or a payment plan available?
A five-installment payment plan is also available if you’d like to spread out your
payments.
Can I join clubs, activities, or sports?
In compliance with our Minors on Campus Policy, Spark Scholars are not eligible to participate in on-campus clubs and activities at Wilkes.
What campus resources can I use?
Spark Scholars are welcome to take advantage of free library access, career planning
services, tutoring, and other academic support services through our Office of Academic
Success.
Where can I find my class schedule?
Your class schedule can be found online below (you will need your Wilkes Portal login).
You can also find this by logging into portal.wilkes.edu external website and navigating to Students → Student Services, on the left-side menu then selecting Classes and Schedules.
How do I get my Wilkes student email and log into online systems?
After registration, you’ll receive an email titled “MUST READ” with your Wilkes login information. It includes everything you’ll need to access
your student email, portal, and online systems. Please read this carefully!
What if I’ve been waitlisted for a course?
If a course fills up and you are put on the waitlist, your coordinator will let you
know. If a spot opens up, you will be automatically added! If you are waitlisted for
a course, please be proactive about checking your class schedule on a regular basis
so that you are aware if you’ve been added.
How do I get a parking pass and student ID? Where can Spark Scholars park on campus?
You’ll get parking and ID instructions in your post-registration email.
Student IDs: Submit your photo online or visit Wilkes Campus Safety (148 S. Main St.) to have
your photo taken and ID printed.
What should I do if I’m running late or miss a class?
If you are running late or know you will be missing a class, email your professor
as soon as possible to let them know. Communication is key in college!
What should I do if I find myself struggling in a course?
If you find you are struggling in a course, reach out! Talk to your professor or Spark
Scholars coordinator right away to go over your options. You also have access to tutoring
and support through the Office of Academic Success, so you’re never on your own.
