Shadae Gates

"If I need my teachers I can reach them. They are always there to help."

Student name: Shadae Gates

Hometown: Baltimore, Maryland
Political Science, Criminology, International Studies
Minor: Women’s Studies

Year: Graduate

Activities On and Off Campus: Big Brother/Big Sister, Goodwill, Good Guides, President of the Multi-Cultural Student Coalition, President of the Sociology/Criminology Club, Women’s Studies Intern, Student Liaison for Admission’s Office

Career Aspirations: I would like to work for the FBI in the Terrorist Department. I intend to get my Master’s in Global Affairs and specialize in homeland security.

Most Worthwhile Leadership Experience: I think the best one is the Multi-Cultural Student Coalition. Just being the president and making Wilkes more aware of the diversity on campus...bringing together many people whom you wouldn’t normally see together.

Just coming in and being a minority and not knowing where I would fit in…to find a place I’m comfortable is a wonderful feeling.

Best thing about being a student at Wilkes University: Not being a social security number. That’s one thing I love about this campus. If I need my teachers I can reach them. They’re always there to help. I feel like I’m not just getting an education, I’m gaining a friendship and leadership opportunities that will help me in the future.

Why Wilkes?  When I walked on to the campus, I just fell in love with it. The political science dept was my first major when I came in. I saw that …I came from a big city and I wanted to go to some place a little smaller. It just seemed like the right fit for me.
