WILKES-BARRE, PA (JUNE 18, 2014) - The Wilkes University School of Education is offering a new online master’s degree program beginning in fall 2014 that will allow career changers to earn Pennsylvania teaching certification at the middle level – grades 4 to 8. Students enrolled in the program will choose an area of specialization: math, science, social studies or English/language arts.
The online master’s degree in middle level education is a 39-credit program that prepares students to enter the education field with initial teaching certification and an advanced degree. It is ideal for individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, the sciences, English, communications or the social sciences. Wilkes also will consider candidates who hold an undergraduate degree in other disciplines but who have at least 18 credits in one of these core areas. Individuals interested in the program are encouraged to contact Wilkes for a transcript review before applying. The program will be tailored to meet each student’s needs, based on their educational histories. The program also requires observation and student teaching hours that can be performed at a school near the student’s home.
The program, which is aligned with Pennsylvania Department of Education standards and requirements, is enrolling students for the fall 2014 semester. Apply online by visiting www.wilkes.edu/applyonline. In addition, applicants must submit transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, two recommendations and required background clearances indicating “no record.”
