Eduardo Ulibarri Discusses Costa Rican Foreign Affairs and Eco-Tourism During Feb. 18 Lecture at Wilkes University

Costa Rican eco-tourism, foreign affairs and the work of the Costa Rican mission at the United Nations will be discussed at a Wilkes University lecture given by Eduardo Ulibarri, Permanent Representative of Costa Rica to the United Nations. Ulibarri will discuss his experiences on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 11:30 a.m. in Gies Hall of the Dorothy Dickson Darte Center. The event is open to the public and admission is free.

Ulibarri has served the United Nations as permanent representative of Costa Rica since August 2010. Since 1979 he has been a professor of communications at the University of Costa Rica. He has also lectured at other universities in Costa Rica, Panama and the United States, including Puerto Rico. From 1982 to 2003, Ulibarri was editor-in-chief of Costa Rica’s leading newspaper, La Nacion.

Ulibarri has served as a board member of the International Center for Journalists and as chairman of the Committee on Freedom of the Press of the Inter-American Press Association. He is the recipient of several journalism awards, including the 1989 Award for Distinguished Services in Journalism from the University of Missouri; the 1996 Maria Moors Cabot prize from Columbia University; the 2001 Costa Rican National Journalism Award; and the 2002 Alacop Prize from the Latin American Associations of Political Consultants.

He graduated from the University of Costa Rica in 1973 and received his M.A. from the University of Missouri. Ulibarri was named a Neiman Fellow at Harvard University during the 1987-88 academic year.

This lecture is part of a collaboration between Wilkes and the United Nations. Presented in partnership with the Humpty Dumpty Institute's Higher Education Alliance for the United Nations, the program brings U.N. officials to campus throughout the year for lectures and informal meetings with students.
