Wilkes University’s Jay S. Sidhu School of Business and Leadership recently announced a new undergraduate business administration degree program in sport and event management. The bachelor’s degree program provides students with the opportunity to develop expertise in business and event management applied to the world of sport and recreation. The new program will begin in the Fall 2014.
The sport and event management program requires students to complete multi-disciplinary and sports management courses as well as an internship in the sports and event management field. As sports have evolved into an integral part of the American culture, the operations of sport programs have become more sophisticated and complex. Managers of sport programs and sport/recreational facilities must become familiar with the intricacies of this segment of the industry to be effective as business professionals. The sport management industry continues to grow across the nation. Event management requires a specific expertise that will be provided to students who complete this new program. The program is also designed to allow students interested in sports, music, or theatre to plan, analyze and operate a sports or event-centered entity.
Wilkes University’s program also will help students develop the skills and knowledge acquired through exposure to the arts, sciences, mathematics, and the humanities. In concert with the personal and professional development program offered by the Sidhu School, students are provided with an environment where they can link academic content in their curriculum with career planning, extracurricular activities and leadership development, thus allowing them the opportunity to build a strong professional network, face social and business challenges and practice meaningful leadership.
The program will offer a variety of elective courses in communications (public relations), nursing (nutrition) and sociology (sociology of sport). The elective courses are geared to prepare students for internships and positions within the sport and event industry.
Wilkes University students at the Sidhu School have previously been offered internships with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, which is part of the American Hockey League, and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, a minor league baseball team. Other Sidhu School graduates have been placed in sports management positions, such as the Pocono Dome and with Price Waterhouse Coopers. The new business administration program will continue to offer these and other internships.
Graduates from the Sidhu School have become competitive and effective organizational leaders and self-fulfilled individuals. Potential careers in the sports and event management industries include sports medicine (pre-med students); education (sports coaching or athletics director); venue management (sports arena or performing arts facility); event planning (including large organizations or corporations, hotels, casinos and theme parks); and communications (marketing, public relations, advertising and media).
