Wilkes University Associate Professor of Art Sharon Cosgrove attended the SummArt 2013: Painters’ Campus in Chisinau, Moldova, from June 14-22. She and local artist Leigh Pawling were the only American painters participating in the international annual symposium and artist exchange sponsored by Mete Bora, President of the Summa Group. The Linde Corporation, of Pittston, Pa., a part of the Summa Group since 1997, partly sponsored the exchange. Wilkes University hosted the event in 2005.
During the trip, Cosgrove worked with foreign artists, exchanging ideas and creating mural-sized paintings in a temporary studio in a shopping mall where visitors had the opportunity to witness the artists’ creative processes. Each artist donated at least one painting, which will be auctioned to support a local Moldovan school.
Cosgrove remarked that the event provided an incredible opportunity to exchange ideas with foreign artists. She said, “It’s amazing how much we grow and learn when we leave the comforts of home and share different world perspectives. It was a great honor to have been invited.”
In addition to the time spent painting with the other artists, Cosgrove shared formal dinners with the program participants each night. She even dined with the Turkish Ambassador to Moldova in the Embassy gardens.
