WILKES-BARRE, PA – “White Mules,” a painting in the permanent collection of Wilkes University’s Sordoni Art Gallery, was recently featured in John Singer Sargent: Figures and Landscapes. 1900-1907, vol. VII of the complete painting of John Singer Sargent published for The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art by Yale University Press. The painting by John Singer Sargent is a watercolor on paper. It was a gift from the estate of Roy Pollack.

The painting depicts two white mules, seen from the rear, resting in a stable with a third brown mule on the far left. Instialation photographs confirm that the painting was shown in the artist’s memorial exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, in 1926. “White Mules: Spain” was a gift from the artist’s sister, Violet Sargent, to her masseuse.

The Sordoni Art Gallery is in the Stark Learning Center on Wilkes campus in Wilkes-Barre. Providing art to the students of Wilkes University and the public, Sordoni’s mission is to educate, enrich, and inspire the creative, intellectual, and artistic lives of students and the public. The Sordoni Gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday, 12 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
