Contact: Vicki Mayk

WILKES-BARRE, PA. (Feb. 19 2013) – Wilkes University’s Nesbitt School of Pharmacy and Nursing has been awarded a Facts & Comparisons® Academic Partnership Program Advancement of Clinical Education Curriculum Grant. Awarded by Wolters Kluwer Health, the $10,000 grant will be used to design a new elective course in the expanding role of pharmacy informatics in pharmacy practice. The course, Pharmacy Informatics: From Theory to Skill, will be offered for the first time in September 2013.

The new course will be developed and taught by Dana Manning, assistant professor of pharmacy practice and Joseph Zarcone, a practicing pharmacist with extensive experience in pharmacy informatics. The grant will be used to purchase the components to set up a flexible mock pharmacy computer system that will be used in the course. Students will have expanded opportunities for hands-on learning in the use of technology and automation in the medication use process that can ultimately result in decreasing medical error, reducing health care costs and improving quality of health care.

Wolters Kluwer Health is a leading global provider of information for healthcare professionals and students. Wilkes University’s proposal was selected based on the degree to which the proposed project would enhance its drug information education to increase awareness and use of referential drug information resources to improve patient care.

According to Manning, pharmacists trained in informatics have the unique ability to not only manipulate data, but to interpret it and utilize it to improve processes. Education in pharmacy informatics will allow our pharmacists to gather and synthesize raw data, available from all of the technological resources at play, into concrete recommendations that will improve medication safety, patient education, and critical patient health outcomes.

“This course will help students to use informational resources to improve patient clinical care, and synthesize new knowledge in both clinical and administrative areas,” Manning says.
