Martin Luther King, Day, January 21, Commemoration Activities

In commemoration of Martin Luther King Day, Wilkes University has two events to which students, faculty and staff are invited.  Wilkes joins many colleges and universities in honoring Dr. King’s legacy through a Day of Service which empowers students to strengthen their communities by creating bridges to isolated populations.  Wilkes will also take part in a citywide event at City Hall.

1.       Wilkes’ Offices of Diversity Initiates and Civic Engagement have teamed up with the ARC of Luzerne County to celebrate MLK.   ARC of Luzerne County is dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.  Students from ARC will gain an understanding of MLK and his work through a presentation and crafts.  You are welcome to be part of this service activity by joining us on Monday, January 21, 2013, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm in the Ballroom.  Lunch will be provided. Members of the Wilkes community can look on as the ARC students create a book about MLK or join in the activity.  Instruction will be provided.  We look forward to your participation.

2.       Wilke-Barre’s MLK Celebration is at City Hall, 3:00 pm-4:30 pm.  Officials from the City of Wilkes-Barre and from WB’s several colleges and universities will honor MLK by talking about his influence on their lives and communities. The Wilkes community is invited to this event organized by Angel Jirau.  If you would like to attend, please contact Erica Acosta (erica.acosta@wilkes.edu) for further information.
