Wilkes University Students Host Anti-Bullying Candlelight Vigil, Oct. 10, Part of National Unity Day Event

WILKES-BARRE, PA. (Oct. 9, 2012) – Wilkes University students are hosting an anti-bullying candlelight vigil on Oct. 10. The vigil will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Kirby Park Amphitheatre in Kingston. The rain date for the event is Oct. 17.

There will be three guest speakers at the vigil who will talk about the painful effect of bullying and what can be done to stop it. Candles, t-shirts, and baked goods will be sold to benefit PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center, an organization which unites, engages and educates communities nationwide to address bullying. The vigil is also in support of PACER’s Unity Day, recognized on Oct. 10, which is a nationwide event to unite against bullying. High school students and other members of the Luzerne County community are urged to attend.

A team of students are coordinating the vigil as part of their First-Year Foundations (FYF) class at Wilkes, which is designed to help students transition into college life. This course section requires its students to be involved in a service project during the semester, allowing them to participate in various experiential leadership activities.

The instructor for the course, Sharon Castano, explains, “The FYF class is the only program that is required of all incoming first year students.  My leadership section is a course designed to allow students to identify their strengths, then take those various talents and participate in community and cultural projects as members of a collaborative group. This group went much further by creating their own event… their idea for this project began in early September when I assigned teams, prior to any of the suicides that occurred locally.”
