Wilkes University has been designated a Military Friendly School by G.I. Jobs magazine. The magazine’s 2011 list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities, and trade schools which are doing the most to embrace America’s veterans as students.
Out of 7,000 schools polled, 1,220 schools make the list nationwide. Wilkes is one of only 65 schools to make the list in Pennsylvania. Schools on the list share a common priority of recruiting students with military experience, as well as offering additional benefits to student veterans such as on-campus veterans programs, credit for service, and military spouse programs. Other criteria for making the list include efforts and positive results in recruiting and retaining military and veteran students and academic accreditations.
Lt. Col. Mark Kaster, retired, Wilkes veterans’ counselor, says the designation reflects the University’s commitment to serve veterans.
“Wilkes University values the veteran and is proud to serve those who have served and continue to serve our nation,” Kaster says. “Wilkes is a military-friendly campus across the entire University structure. We support veterans and their dependents who qualify for the veteran benefits beginning with the admissions and financial aid process. That support continues through academic and social support while they are our student.”
Kaster, who recently retired as commander of the University’s Air Force ROTC program, became veterans’ counselor in July. He works with the Wilkes admissions office in recruiting veterans. Once veterans are admitted, he provides benefits counseling and process benefit requests. He also guides veterans to opportunities and resources available at the University. Wilkes participates in the Yellow Ribbon veterans benefits program, as well as many others.
G.I. Jobs is published by Victory Media, a veteran-owned business which also publishes The Guide to Military Friendly Schools, Military Spouse, and Vetreprenur magazines. They annually rate the nation’s Military Friendly Employers, Military Spouse Friendly Employers, and Best Corporations for Veteran-Owned Businesses.
