The 35-member advisory board will focus on identifying the skills needed to practice law and on the ethical and professionalism rules that define the profession. They will also help identify clinical programs that will serve the region’s unique needs, discuss how to fully integrate mentoring opportunities both inside and outside the classroom, and give advice on the importance of running both full- and part-time programs.
“We’ve assembled an impressive group of great legal minds who will help guide and advise the formation of a law school business plan and much more,” said Loren D. “Chip” Prescott, Dean of the Law School Planning Initiative. “Each has made significant contributions to the legal profession and will serve this critical stage of the planning process well.”
Susan E. Schwab, Esq., a 1981 Wilkes graduate, will serve as chair of the advisory board. She currently serves as Pennsylvania Deputy State Treasurer for Administration. “The law school will enhance the University as a center of learning and help spur economic development in Wilkes-Barre and Northeastern Pennsylvania,” said Schwab. “The school will attract a more diverse student body to the University and offer new opportunities for its graduates and others to advance and contribute to the region. Lawyers help businesses grow, attract new businesses and create their own businesses. Many also become leaders in government and community organizations.”
Wilkes hopes to open the law school with a class of 80 to 100 students in the Fall of 2010. The new school will be the region’s first law school, and is expected to provide an important source of legal representation in support of the region’s growing economic base.
J. Michael Eakin, Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice, along with Jesse Choper, a 1962 graduate of Wilkes, and a member of the faculty and former dean of Berkeley Law School, will also serve on the board.
Another advisory board member is William M. Sullivan, Ph.D., lead author of Educating Lawyers: Preparation for the Profession of Law, a report on legal education published in 2007 by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Sullivan’s report has stimulated a comprehensive national debate on the strengths and weaknesses of a traditional law school education.
The institution has been investigating the possibility of creating the region’s first law school as a means of providing access to one of today’s most sought-after degrees to students from NEPA and beyond.
