The 18th-ranked Wilkes University wrestling team opened their 2006-07 season by squeezing out a 17-16 win over 14th-ranked York College on Saturday night in the Marts Center.

At 197 pounds, Wilkes’ Brandon Kelly put his number-one national ranking on the line against Kevin Ruff. Kelly had no problems, cruising to a 17-1 win by technical fall that secured five critical team points and gave the Colonels a 17-12 lead with one match remaining.

York’s Luke Panizzi and Wilkes’ Keith Altiery took the mat at 285 pounds. Panizzi earned a 12-2 major decision to make the final score 17-16.
