Passing of Trustee Emeritus William H. Tremayne '57
Trustee emeritus William H. Tremayne ’57 of Somerset, New Jersey passed away on Friday,
After receiving his bachelor of science degree at Wilkes in commerce and finance in 1957, Bill graduated from American College in 1964 and received his certification as a Chartered Life Underwriter. Bill enjoyed a remarkable 36-year career at Prudential Financial, rising to the role of senior vice president.
Bill joined the Wilkes Board of Trustees in 1998 and served on the Audit, Finance, Student Affairs, Governance and Executive Committees over the course of the next ten years. He was named Chair of the Board in 2002 and was granted emeritus status in recognition of his decades of dedicated service to the University in 2008. In addition to these leadership roles, Bill served as President of the Alumni Association and was appointed as Chair the University’s Advisory Council by President Christopher Breiseth. He was the recipient of the Eugene S. Farley Memorial Award and Colonel Blazer. The Tremayne Hearth in the Henry Student Center, a favorite spot among students, bears Bill and his son Carter’s names. Bill served concurrently on the board with his brother, Ron, a member of the class of 1958, who passed away in 2008.
Bill’s civic and community affiliations in his home state of New Jersey were extensive. They included service to the Board of the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, the New Brunswick Development Corporation and the Business Executives for National Security. He was appointed by three former governors, Messrs. Byrne, Florio, and Kean to address challenges in the state of New Jersey via the N.J. Taxpayers Association, the Capital Needs Commission, Newark School System Study, N.J. Economic Advisory Committee and, in 1988, he was tapped to chair the N.J. Highway Authority.
Bill is survived by his wife, Lora, three children and numerous grandchildren. His obituary can be viewed here. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
