Education Department Offers Summer Academies for Children
The Education Department of Wilkes University is offering two innovative day academies on campus for children entering Pre-Kindergarten through grade six, from July 23 through August 2, 2018. The Reading Academy and The Arts Academy both focus on the enjoyment of the arts and reading, and fine-tuning children’s reading skills in preparation for the upcoming academic year.
Please note that these experiences are not designed for special needs students or for maintenance of IEPs. Elementary and Early Childhood Education majors will work directly with the children under the direction of Dr. Diane Polachek, Professor of Education, certified and experienced elementary and early childhood school teacher, and Pennsylvania certified reading specialist, and Mr. Robert Richards, Adjunct Instructor of Education, certified and experienced elementary school teacher, and Pennsylvania certified reading specialist.
The Reading Academy will meet daily in Breiseth Hall, located at 151 South Franklin Street, Wilkes-Barre, beginning at 9:00 A.M. and ending at 11:30 A.M. Parents have the option of having their children bring lunch to eat in a supervised setting from 11:30 A.M. until 12 noon. Parents should drop off and pick up children on the second floor. Academy teachers will be there each morning to welcome the students and will wait with them as parents pick them up at the end of each day’s session. The Arts Academy will meet from 12:00 P.M. to 2:30 P.M. All activities will take place in Breiseth Hall. Parents should pack a drink and mid-morning and afternoon snacks and ensure that children are dressed in comfortable summer attire.
Tuition for two weeks for each academy is $100. There is no fee for children and grandchildren of Wilkes University employees. Make checks payable to Wilkes University. Families enrolling two or more children are eligible for a 10% discount for each child. Contact Dr. Diane Polachek for more information at email@example.com or 570.408.4684. All registrations must be received by June 21, 2018. Space is limited.
