Established in 1919, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry is the world authority on chemical nomenclature and terminology, including the naming of new elements in the periodic table; on standardized methods for measurement; and on atomic weights, and many other critically-evaluated data. The Fellows Program facilitates a continued dialogue with the world's scientists, helping to achieve the Union's mission of uniting a fragmented, global chemistry community for the advancement of chemical sciences.

Wilkes University Announces New Date for Founders Gala 2020

Wilkes University has announced that the Founders Gala, previously scheduled for June 6, has been rescheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2020. Now in its seventh year, the Founders Gala celebrates the University's legacy of educating first-generation college students. The gala will be held at the Westmoreland Club, 59 S. Franklin St. in Wilkes-Barre. The highlight of the event will be the presentation of the President's Medal to Esther B. Davidowitz of Kingston, Pa. The President's Medal is bestowed annually on an individual whose personal and professional life reflect the highest aspirations of Wilkes University.

The Sordoni Art Gallery at Wilkes University presents Material Pulses: Seven Viewpoints from Jan. 28 to March 15. The exhibition, focused on the art of quilt making, presents 17 works by seven fiber artists representing the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. Curated by internationally renowned artist and teacher Nancy Crow, Material Pulses contributes to the dialogue of contemporary textile arts.

The Wilkes University student team has won the statewide final in the America250PA marketing competition. The marketing competition challenges students to come up with a campaign promoting the 250th anniversary of American independence in Pennsylvania. The team competed at the Nov. 19 event held at the Wilkes-Barre Connect Conference at The Woodlands. The Wilkes student team had previously tied for first place at the regional competition held in October.

Wilkes University and HACC Announce Agreements for Elementary and Early Childhood Education Students

Wilkes University and Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC) have entered into articulation agreements that will help HACC graduates transfer to Wilkes to complete their bachelor's degree. Under the new agreements, students who earn an Associate in Applied Science in early care and education or an Associate in Arts in early childhood - elementary education from HACC can transfer into the Wilkes bachelor's degree in elementary and early childhood education as a junior.

Wilkes University Partners With Pennsylvania Harm Reduction Coalition to Host Opioid Advocacy Forum on Nov. 14

Anyone can be a hero and join the efforts to end the opioid crisis. That will be the focus when Wilkes University and the Pennsylvania Harm Reduction Coalition partner to host an Opioid Advocacy Forum on Nov. 14. Devin Reaves, executive director and co-founder of the coalition, will lead the forum. The event takes place from 5:30 to 9 p.m. in the Henry Student Center Ballroom, 84 W. South St., Wilkes-Barre. Pizza will be served. The training is free and open to the public but advance registration is required. To register, go to wilkeshero.eventbrite.com.

Wilkes University Nesbitt School of Pharmacy Pass Rates Exceed National and State Averages

Graduates from the Wilkes University Nesbitt School of Pharmacy achieved a pass rate that exceeds the national and state averages on the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) and the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE). Wilkes Pharm.D. graduates who took the NAPLEX for the first time earned a 95.52 percent pass rate. The MPJE pass rate for Wilkes pharmacy graduates taking the Pennsylvania exam for the first time was 91.23 percent. Testing occurred from May through August 2019.

Wilkes University Opens Norman Mailer Room With Reception Oct. 10

Wilkes University becomes the home of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Norman Mailer's personal collection of manuscripts and memorabilia when a reception opens the Norman Mailer Room and Collection on Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. in the E.S. Farley Library. The event kicks off the Norman Mailer Society annual conference, "Mailer on Politics, Public Life, and Pop Culture," which runs Oct. 10-12. Mailer, who died in 2007 at 84, was the founding chair of Wilkes' Maslow Family Graduate Creative Writing Program's advisory board. The event will be attended by several members of Mailer's family.

The lecture will be delivered by Nancy G. Love, professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Michigan. The event begins at 7 p.m. in the Henry Student Center Ballroom, 84 W. South St., Wilkes-Barre. The lecture is hosted by the Wilkes University Department of Earth and Environmental Science and presented in cooperation with the Keystone NE Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers, Keystone College, King's College and the University of Scranton and is free and open to the public.

Wilkes University invites students in grades 4 through 8 to explore the fields of biology, mathematics, physics, chemistry, environmental engineering and earth and environmental sciences during STEM Discovery Day. The free event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Lawrence and Sally Cohen Science Center, and the Stark Learning Center, 150-180 S. River St. Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Stark Learning Center. The annual event previously was called Passport to Science.

The performances will take place on Sept. 26, 27 and 28 at 8 p.m. with matinee performances on Sept. 28 and 29 at 2 p.m. The production is at Wilkes' Dorothy Dickson Darte Center for the Performing Arts, 239 S. River St., Wilkes-Barre.
