The Wilkes University English Department's Allan Hamilton Dickson Fund Writers Series brings three distinguished writers to campus in the spring 2019 semester. Each of the writers will visit campus to read from their work and conduct workshops with students. The readings are free and open to the public.

Wilkes University will commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 22 with an event, "Do The Right Thing." Sponsored in collaboration with the Campus Interfaith office and the office of Diversity Affairs, it will take place from 11 a.m. to noon in the Henry Student Center Ballroom, 84 West South Street, Wilkes-Barre. The event theme draws from a famous King sermon, in which he stated, "The time is always right to do what is right. "

Wilkes University's Small Business Development Center has set a record for the amount of financing that it secured for clients in 2018. More than $17,456,000 was secured by the SBDC to help clients to start or expand their businesses. It is the highest amount achieved by the center since its formation in 1980.

Wilkes received the 2018 Pride of Place award from the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce at the Chamber's annual dinner held on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at Mohegan Sun Pocono in Plains Twp. The University was recognized for the Campus Gateway Project.

Wilkes University Passan School of Nursing Pass Rate Exceeds National and State Averages

Recent graduates from Wilkes University's Passan School of Nursing achieved a pass rate that exceeds the national and state averages on the National Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Wilkes bachelor of science in nursing graduates taking the test between Oct. 2017 and Sept. 2018 achieved a 95.12 percent pass rate.

Wilkes University Nesbitt School of Pharmacy Holds Brown Bag Medication Review on Oct. 30

Wilkes University's Nesbitt School of Pharmacy, in collaboration with Area Agency on Aging for Luzerne and Wyoming Counties, sponsors Brown Bag Medication Review during American Pharmacists' Month in October in Agency on the Aging Centers. The event will occur on Oct. 30 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 17 centers across the region. Wilkes will send over 120 student phamracists and over 20 pharmacists to conduct brown bag medication reviews and blood pressure screenings. Attendees participating in the medication review are asked to bring all medications or a list of medications including over-the-counter medications and vitamins. Free pill boxes, disposal bags, medication take-aways and health trackers will be available at the event.

Wilkes University's Catherine H. Bone Lecture Series Features Renowned Chemist Geraldine Richmond, Oct. 17

Renowned chemist, Geraldine Richmond, Ph.D., presidential chair in science and professor of chemistry at the University of Oregon, will deliver Wilkes University's Catherine H. Bone lecture on Wednesday, Oct. 17. She will speak at 7 p.m. in Stark Learning Center, room 101. Richmond will deliver the lecture "Mulling Over Emulsions: Molecular Assembly at Complex Liquid Surfaces." The lecture is free and open to the public.

Former Director, Special Advisor on Education at U.N. Women Speaks About Women's Empowerment on Oct. 16 at Wilkes University

Women's empowerment from an educational and humanitarian perspective will be the topic when Wilkes University hosts its United Nations Lecture Series on Tuesday, Oct. 16. Patience Stephens, former director and special advisor on education at United Nations Women, an organization dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women, will speak at 4 p.m. The event will be in room 214 of the Arnaud C. Marts Center, 274 S. Franklin St.. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Heather Sincavage, director of the Sordoni Art Gallery and assistant professor of art at Wilkes University, is one of seven artists and artistic organizations from around the country recognized for artistic achievement by the Tanne Foundation. The foundation's mission is to underscore the importance of supporting individual artists with unrestricted funding. Approx. $63,000 total was awarded to the seven honorees.

Wilkes University's newest facility, the Mark Engineering Center, officially opened with a dedication ceremony on Sept. 14. The dedication is the culmination of a 16-month, $8 million renovation to the engineering facilities in Stark Learning Center, creating flexible lab and learning space in disciplines that include nanotechnology, additive manufacturing and bioengineering.

Wilkes University Observes Patriot Day, Commemorates 17th Anniversary of Sept. 11 Attacks With Event

Wilkes University will observe Patriots Day on Tuesday, Sept. 11. Commemorating the 17th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, the event will pay tribute to all those impacted with a ceremony led by the University's ROTC Detachment 752. The event will begin at 12:30 p.m. in the Henry Student Center Ballroom, 84 W. South St., Wilkes-Barre. The event will be highlighted by presenting a Flag of Honor, a special flag that has all names of the victims of the attacks printed on it. The Flag of Honor being used at the event is being presented to Wilkes and will be framed and hung permanently on the wall in the Air Force ROTC Detachment office within University Center on Main.

Two Wilkes University students from the Jay S. Sidhu School of Business and Leadership were awarded the Student Showcase Award at the Accreditation Council for Business Schools & Programs (ACBSP) Conference. Grace Boyle of Andreas, Pa., and Patrice Lonardi of Harrisburg, Pa., presented their research, Excellence in Undergraduate Business Programs through Promotion. It highlights trends in digital promotion of undergraduate business programs. The presentation was selected from among all regional student presentations. The conference was held June 8-11, in Kansas City, Mo.

Wilkes University President Patrick F. Leahy has been appointed to serve on Pennsylvania's Tuition Account Program Advisory Board. Leahy is the only president of more than 90 private institutions in the state to be selected for the board, which includes 19 members. Leahy was appointed by Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf. Other members include State Treasurer Joseph M. Torsella and State Representative Michael Peifer.

For the second year in a row, the Pat Tillman Foundation has recognized a Wilkes University student among their annual Tillman Scholars. Dana Hatwig, a lieutenant in the United States Navy Nurse Corps, is among 60 scholars in the foundation's 2018 class. Hatwig, of Jacksonville, Fla., is pursuing her master of science in nursing as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. She was selected from 3,000 applicants nationwide.

Four Wilkes University students were commissioned and received the rank of second lieutenant in the United States Air Force. The commissioning ceremony, hosted by Air Force ROTC Detachment 752 at Wilkes University, was held on May 18 in the Dorothy Dickson Darte Center. The event was attended by family, friends and university staff.

Wilkes University Honors Edward Foote with Carpenter Award for Teaching

Edward Foote, department chair and professor of pharmacy practice, received the Carpenter Award for Teaching. The award, considered Wilkes' highest honor for teaching, recognizes an outstanding member of the faculty and includes a $1,000 award and framed certificate. The name of the recipient is also inscribed on a permanent plaque on campus. The awardee is nominated by his or her full-time colleagues and must have been a full-time employee for at least three years.

Ten Wilkes University electrical engineering students put their classroom experience to the test when they toured On Semiconductor in Mountain Top, Pa., on April 30. Students enrolled in assistant professor of electrical engineering, Wei Du's, microfabrication lab course had the opportunity to broaden their vision on the current semiconductor field. The Sordoni Art Gallery at Wilkes University will hold two afternoon lectures in conjunction with the current exhibit, Selections from the Sordoni Collection of American Illustration & Comic Art. The lectures begin at 4:30 p.m. in the Sordoni Art Gallery at 141 S. Main St. They are free and open to the public. Scheduled events include: • April 25, "What Makes a Pulp Different from a Slick" by David Saunders, illustration historian. Saunders is the son of Norman Saunders who is featured in the exhibition. • May 2, "The Solitary Figure in American Illustration" by Andrew J. Sordoni, III.

Wilkes University Chamber Orchestra Presents, "Rule Britannia" Concert on April 30

The Wilkes University Chamber Orchestra will present a concert of music on April 30, at 8 p.m. in the Main Stage of the Dorothy Dickson Darte Center for the Performing Arts. The concert is conducted by John Vaida, adjunct professor of violin at Wilkes University and the director of the Wilkes University Chamber Orchestra. Admission is free and the concert is open to the public.

Wilkes University and the Luzerne County Medical Society, in partnership with the Luzerne County District Attorney and Sheriff offices, are hosting a local event on National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

Norman Mailer Writers Colony to Offer Workshops During Wilkes University's Pennsylvania Writers Conference, July 29-Aug. 10

The Norman Mailer Writers Colony, in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Writers Conference, will offer creative writing workshops at Wilkes University. Workshops will cover fiction, nonfiction, memoir, poetry, screenwriting, publishing and self promotion. One session will run from July 29 to Aug. 3 and a second session will be offered from Aug. 4 to Aug. 10.

Wilkes University Civic Band Concert on April 28

The Wilkes University Civic Band will present a concert of music on April 28, at 3 p.m. in the Dorothy Dickson Darte Center for the Performing Arts. The concert, conducted by Philip G. Simon, associate professor of music, will feature guest conductor, Thomas Fadden and guest dancer, Wilkes student Brianna Schunk. Admission is free and the concert is open to the public.

Earth Observations and Public Policy is Focus of Kimball Lecture at Wilkes University on April 19

"Of Fire, Floods and Penguins: Earth Observations and Their Use in Public Policy" will be the focus of the annual Kimball Lecture on April 19 at Wilkes University. It will be presented by Ann Bartuska, a 1975 Wilkes graduate and vice president for the Land, Water and Nature Program at Resources for the Future. Bartuska will speak at 8 p.m. in Stark Learning Center, Room 101. The event is free and open to the public.

Wilkes University Student Awarded Scholarship to Study in Spain

Wilkes University student, Danielle McGlynn of Langhorne, Pa., received a scholarship for a summer study abroad experience in Spain. McGlynn was awarded the Cultural Study Abroad Award, sponsored by Eric Pape, an alumnus of Wilkes University. She will study in Madrid, Barcelona and surrounding regions this July.

Wilkes University Nesbitt School of Pharmacy Student Places in Top Ten in National Competition

Wilkes University pharmacy student, Dylan Fox, was named a top ten finalist for the 2018 National Patient Counseling Competition. He was recognized at the American Pharmacists Association Annual Meeting held March 16 to 19 in Nashville, Tenn. Fox, who is only a second-year pharmacy student in the four-year program, was named a top ten finalist in a competition that includes representatives from nearly all of over 130 pharmacy programs in the United States.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has rescheduled his appearance at Wilkes University's Max Rosenn Lecture in Law and Humanities. The lecture, originally scheduled for April 29, will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, 2018, in the University's McHale Athletic Center, 169 S. Main St.

Twelfth Annual ASME Car Show at Wilkes University on April 15

The 12th annual American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Car Show at Wilkes University will be held on Sunday, April 15, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will be held in the parking lot behind the Henry Student Center, 84 W. South St., Wilkes-Barre. The show is free for spectators. Those interested in participating may register a vehicle on the day of the event beginning at 8:30 a.m. The rain date is April 22.
