A program of choral music featuring the Wilkes University Chorus, Chamber Singers and the University Women's Ensemble will be presented on Nov. 24 at 3 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 97 S. Student pharmacists from the Wilkes University Nesbitt School of Pharmacy will participate in the National Day of Service on Nov. 9 by offering patient care services to members of the community. The pharmacists and students will be offering free blood pressure screenings as well as free medication and immunization reviews to anyone in Luzerne, Lackawanna, Lehigh and Montgomery counties.

Anyone can be a hero and join the efforts to end the opioid crisis. That will be the focus when Wilkes University and the Pennsylvania Harm Reduction Coalition partner to host an Opioid Advocacy Forum on Nov. 14. Devin Reaves, executive director and co-founder of the coalition, will lead the forum. The event takes place from 5:30 to 9 p.m. in the Henry Student Center Ballroom, 84 W. South St., Wilkes-Barre. St. John's University Pharmaceutical Industry Fellowship Program

Wilkes University Nesbitt School of Pharmacy Pass Rates Exceed National and State Averages

Graduates from the Wilkes University Nesbitt School of Pharmacy achieved a pass rate that exceeds the national and state averages on the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) and the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE). Wilkes Pharm.D. graduates who took the NAPLEX for the first time earned a 95.52 percent pass rate. The MPJE pass rate for Wilkes pharmacy graduates taking the Pennsylvania exam for the first time was 91.23 percent. Testing occurred from May through August 2019.

The Women's and Gender Studies Program at Wilkes University will host Kadida Kenner of Why Courts Matter PA for a lecture on Oct. 23. Why Courts Matter PA is a non-partisan, non-profit (c)(3) organization and coalition of more than 40 organizational partners who work together to educate the public about the importance of filling federal court vacancies with fair, independent, qualified judges of diverse personal and professional backgrounds.

The sessions are designed to ensure that each senior citizen is enrolled in a Medicare plan that will work best for their needs and their budget. The sessions will take place at Cooks Pharmacy, 777 Wyoming Ave., Kingston.

Wilkes University Opens Norman Mailer Room With Reception Oct. 10

Wilkes University becomes the home of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Norman Mailer's personal collection of manuscripts and memorabilia when a reception opens the Norman Mailer Room and Collection on Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. in the E.S. Farley Library. The event kicks off the Norman Mailer Society annual conference, "Mailer on Politics, Public Life, and Pop Culture," which runs Oct. 10-12. Mailer, who died in 2007 at 84, was the founding chair of Wilkes' Maslow Family Graduate Creative Writing Program's advisory board. The event will be attended by several members of Mailer's family.

Urban Water Infrastructure Is Topic of Kappe Lecture at Wilkes University on Oct. 30

"Rethinking America's Urban Water Infrastructure: Resource Efficiency, Access and Public Health," will be the topic of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists 2019 Kappe Lecture on Oct. 30 at Wilkes University. The lecture will be delivered by Nancy G. Love, professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Michigan. The event begins at 7 p.m. in the Henry Student Center Ballroom, 84 W. South St., Wilkes-Barre. The lecture is hosted by the Wilkes University Department of Earth and Environmental Science and presented in cooperation with the Keystone NE Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers, Keystone College, King's College and the University of Scranton and is free and open to the public.

The free event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Lawrence and Sally Cohen Science Center, and the Stark Learning Center, 150-180 S. River St. Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Stark Learning Center. The annual event previously was called Passport to Science.

Wilkes University graduate student Yosara Gonzalez of Hazle Township, Pa., is the recipient of a career development grant from the American Association of University Women (AAUW). Gonzalez is currently pursuing her Master of Science degree in middle level education with a focus on English/language arts at Wilkes. She will seek academic work and lead innovative community projects to empower women and girls as a result of the grant. Gonzalez is a bilingual liaison for the Hazleton Area School District.

Wilkes University students in the Nesbitt School of Pharmacy were awarded the National Rookie Award of the 2019 National Consumers League Script Your Future Challenge. The award was presented during the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy annual meeting. The event was held July 13-17 at the Hyatt Regency, Chicago, Ill.

Wilkes University Doctor of Philosophy in nursing student, Jamie Hankins, was awarded the Promise of Nursing Faculty Fellowship for the Pennsylvania region. The fellowship, administered by the Foundation of the National Student Nurses' Association, is awarded to registered nurses enrolled in graduate-level, degree-granting programs in select regions of the United States.

SHINE Of Luzerne County Announces Opening Of New Centers In West Pittston and Wilkes-Barre in Fall 2019

SHINE of Luzerne County at Wilkes University has announced that it will open two new centers for its after-school program in September 2019. The after-school centers will be at Kistler Elementary School in the Wilkes-Barre Area School District and the Pittston Intermediate Center in the Pittston Area School District. The addition of the two new centers brings the total number of SHINE after-school centers to nine. The expansion of the program is made possible by a $2 million grant SHINE received from the Pennsylvania Department of Education's 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant program for 2019-2024.

Wilkes University's Nesbitt School of Pharmacy will provide high school juniors and seniors with a prescription for a successful career during the Discover Pharmacy Day Camp this summer. The two-day camp begins Aug. 13 at 8:30 a.m. and concludes Aug.14 at 5 p.m. Overnight accommodations are not available. The fee is $50 per student. Deadline to apply is Aug. 1.

Leahy was recognized during the Chamber's 2019 EPIC Awards. The EPIC Awards, which stands for Extraordinary People Inspiring Community, took place on Tuesday, June 11 at Wyoming Seminary's Kirby Center for Creative Arts.

Wilkes University Students Place Third In National CQA Investment Challenge

Students in Wilkes University's Sidhu School of Business and Leadership placed third in the fifth annual Chicago Quantitative Alliance (CQA) Investment Challenge. The Wilkes team, called Wilkes Gold, competed against 50 teams, beating students from The University of Chicago, CalTech, Carnegie Mellon MBA, Duke University, Cornell University, University of Michigan, Washington University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The Wilkes team received $1,000 for their third-place finish.

The Sordoni Art Gallery at Wilkes University presents Simply Picasso from May 31 through June 2. The pop-up exhibition features a ceramic piece created by Pablo Picasso at the Madoura pottery studio in Vallauris, France. The piece will be on display and open to the public from 12 noon to 4 p.m. during the three-day exhibition.

The state of education was the topic of discussion when Noe Ortega, Pennsylvania Department of Education deputy secretary for postsecondary and higher education, visited Wilkes University to meet with administrators, faculty and staff on Monday, May 13.

Wilkes University awarded 797 bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees at its 72nd spring commencement ceremonies on May 18. The ceremony for graduate students receiving doctoral and master's degrees was held at 10 a.m., while the ceremony for undergraduates receiving bachelor's degrees was held at 3 p.m. Both ceremonies were held in the McHale Athletic Center in the University Center on Main, 169 S. Main Street in Wilkes-Barre.

Wilkes University Student Pharmacists Are Matched With Post-Graduate Year Residencies

Wilkes University's Nesbitt School of Pharmacy continues to match student pharmacists seeking post-graduate residency training at a rate of 15 percent above the national average. Eighty percent of students and alumni from Wilkes University's Nesbitt School of Pharmacy were successfully matched into residency training programs in 2019. Twenty-six Wilkes students receiving the doctor of pharmacy degree in May 2019 were accepted into programs.

Wilkes University Nesbitt School of Pharmacy student Taylor Hodle of Dallas, Pa., was named the 2019 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Walmart Scholar. The Walmart Scholar program provides a $1,000 scholarship for students to attend the 2019 AACP Annual Meeting and Teachers Seminar in Chicago, Ill. Hodle is a fourth-year student pharmacist.

Challenges at the event will build on skills learned in the STEAM curriculum the students have worked with during the school year at the after-school centers. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at Wilkes University's Arnaud C. Marts Center, 292 S Franklin St, Wilkes-Barre.

Wilkes University Honors Helen Davis with Carpenter Award for Teaching

Helen Davis, associate professor of English, received the Carpenter Award for Teaching. The award, considered Wilkes' highest honor for teaching, recognizes an outstanding member of the faculty and includes a $1,000 award and framed certificate. The name of the recipient is also inscribed on a permanent plaque on campus. The awardee is nominated by his or her full-time colleagues and must have been a full-time employee for at least three years.

Wilkes University's Chapter of Tri Beta National Biological Honor Society Receives Bertholf Award As Best Chapter in U.S.

The Wilkes University Theta Delta chapter of Beta Beta Beta national biological honor society has been recognized as the top chapter in the nation with the 2017-2018 Lloyd M. Bertholf Award. The award recognizes a chapter which has best promoted the triple aims of Beta Beta Beta: scholarship, dissemination of scientific information and promotion of biological research. It is the first time that the Wilkes University chapter has received the top recognition. The chapter previously had received an honorable mention. The award is determined by data which is collected at the end of the year and point system, then awarded the following year.

Wilkes University student pharmacist Dylan Fox was named a top ten finalist for the 2019 National Patient Counseling Competition. This is the second year Fox was a finalist. He was recognized at the American Pharmacists Association Annual Meeting held March 22 to 25 in Seattle, Wash. Fox, a Denver, Pa., native, who is a third-year pharmacy student in the four-year program, competed against students from almost all of the 140 pharmacy programs in the United States who attend the event.

Acclaimed novelist, essayist and short story writer NoViolet Bulawayo will read from her work on April 17 as part of the Allan Hamilton Dickson Fund Spring Writers Series at Wilkes University. The reading, hosted by the Wilkes English Department, will be at 7 p.m. in the Salon of Kirby Hall, 202 S. River St., Wilkes-Barre. Bulawayo also will conduct a workshop with Wilkes students that day. The event is free and open to the public.

The Wilkes University Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences Department received a software donation from Petroleum Experts, Inc. (PETEX). The donation includes 10 educational user licenses of its MOVE suite, which PETEX values at $2.18 million.

The Sordoni Art Gallery at Wilkes University presents Ukiyo-e to Shin Hanga: Japanese Woodcuts from the Syracuse University Art Collection from April 2 through May 18. The exhibition is curated by Andrew Saluti, assistant professor and program coordinator of the graduate program in museum studies in the school of design at Syracuse University. The exhibition illustrates the transition of imagery through 250 years of the Japanese woodcut.
