John Anthony "Beno" Borzell Golf Tournament Benefits Students At Wilkes University and Wyoming Area High School

The Borzell family has presented Wilkes University with a check for $10,000 and awarded an additional $10,200 in scholarships to six Wyoming Area High School graduates. The gifts are proceeds from the 2017 John Anthony "Beno" Borzell Golf Tournament. The event, now in its seventh year, has raised $105,900 to date for scholarships and facilities that benefit students at Wilkes University and Wyoming Area High School.

Wilkes University Provost Dr. Anne Skleder announced the Dean's List for the Spring 2018 Semester. To be named to the Dean's List, students must obtain a minimum 3.5 grade point average and carry at least 12 credits.

Wilkes University Student Dana Hatwig Named a 2018 Pat Tillman Scholar

For the second year in a row, the Pat Tillman Foundation has recognized a Wilkes University student among their annual Tillman Scholars. Dana Hatwig, a lieutenant in the United States Navy Nurse Corps, is among 60 scholars in the foundation's 2018 class. Hatwig, of Jacksonville, Fla., is pursuing her master of science in nursing as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. She was selected from 3,000 applicants nationwide.

The exhibition features 43 artists from around the world who push the limits of the medium. It is curated by Ben Woodeson, a British artist known for challenging, and sometimes dangerous, works.

Wilkes University Students Commissioned as Second Lieutenant

Four Wilkes University students were commissioned and received the rank of second lieutenant in the United States Air Force. The commissioning ceremony, hosted by Air Force ROTC Detachment 752 at Wilkes University, was held on May 18 in the Dorothy Dickson Darte Center. The event was attended by family, friends and university staff.

Wilkes University Honors Edward Foote with Carpenter Award for Teaching

Edward Foote, department chair and professor of pharmacy practice, received the Carpenter Award for Teaching. The award, considered Wilkes' highest honor for teaching, recognizes an outstanding member of the faculty and includes a $1,000 award and framed certificate. The name of the recipient is also inscribed on a permanent plaque on campus. The awardee is nominated by his or her full-time colleagues and must have been a full-time employee for at least three years.

The nearly 800 degrees awarded on Saturday brings Wilkes University's 2017-18 total degree conferrals to 1,585. Only five other private universities in Pennsylvania with Wilkes' program mix can boast this figure.

Wilkes University Students Tour On Semiconductor as Part of Microfabrication Lab

Ten Wilkes University electrical engineering students put their classroom experience to the test when they toured On Semiconductor in Mountain Top, Pa., on April 30. Students enrolled in assistant professor of electrical engineering, Wei Du's, microfabrication lab course had the opportunity to broaden their vision on the current semiconductor field. The trip will continue to be offered with the course in the future.

Wilkes University is expected to award nearly 800 bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees at its 71st spring commencement ceremonies on May 19. The ceremony for graduate students receiving doctoral and master's degrees will be held at 10 a.m., while the ceremony for undergraduates receiving bachelor's degrees will be held at 3 p.m. Both ceremonies are being held in a new location, the McHale Athletic Center in the University Center on Main, 169 S. Main Street in Wilkes-Barre.

The Sordoni Art Gallery at Wilkes University will hold two afternoon lectures in conjunction with the current exhibit, Selections from the Sordoni Collection of American Illustration & Comic Art. The lectures begin at 4:30 p.m. in the Sordoni Art Gallery at 141 S. Main St. They are free and open to the public. Scheduled events include: • April 25, "What Makes a Pulp Different from a Slick" by David Saunders, illustration historian. Saunders is the son of Norman Saunders who is featured in the exhibition. • May 2, "The Solitary Figure in American Illustration" by Andrew J. Sordoni, III.

The Wilkes University Chamber Orchestra will present a concert of music on April 30, at 8 p.m. in the Main Stage of the Dorothy Dickson Darte Center for the Performing Arts. The concert is conducted by John Vaida, adjunct professor of violin at Wilkes University and the director of the Wilkes University Chamber Orchestra. Admission is free and the concert is open to the public.

Norman Mailer Writers Colony to Offer Workshops During Wilkes University's Pennsylvania Writers Conference, July 29-Aug. 10

The Norman Mailer Writers Colony, in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Writers Conference, will offer creative writing workshops at Wilkes University. Workshops will cover fiction, nonfiction, memoir, poetry, screenwriting, publishing and self promotion. One session will run from July 29 to Aug. 3 and a second session will be offered from Aug. 4 to Aug. 10.

Wilkes University Civic Band Concert on April 28

The Wilkes University Civic Band will present a concert of music on April 28, at 3 p.m. in the Dorothy Dickson Darte Center for the Performing Arts. The concert, conducted by Philip G. Simon, associate professor of music, will feature guest conductor, Thomas Fadden and guest dancer, Wilkes student Brianna Schunk. Admission is free and the concert is open to the public.

Earth Observations and Public Policy is Focus of Kimball Lecture at Wilkes University on April 19

"Of Fire, Floods and Penguins: Earth Observations and Their Use in Public Policy" will be the focus of the annual Kimball Lecture on April 19 at Wilkes University. It will be presented by Ann Bartuska, a 1975 Wilkes graduate and vice president for the Land, Water and Nature Program at Resources for the Future. Bartuska will speak at 8 p.m. in Stark Learning Center, Room 101. The event is free and open to the public.

Wilkes University student, Danielle McGlynn of Langhorne, Pa., received a scholarship for a summer study abroad experience in Spain. McGlynn was awarded the Cultural Study Abroad Award, sponsored by Eric Pape, an alumnus of Wilkes University. She will study in Madrid, Barcelona and surrounding regions this July.

Wilkes University Nesbitt School of Pharmacy Student Places in Top Ten in National Competition

Wilkes University pharmacy student, Dylan Fox, was named a top ten finalist for the 2018 National Patient Counseling Competition. He was recognized at the American Pharmacists Association Annual Meeting held March 16 to 19 in Nashville, Tenn. Fox, who is only a second-year pharmacy student in the four-year program, was named a top ten finalist in a competition that includes representatives from nearly all of over 130 pharmacy programs in the United States.

Wilkes University will celebrate its legacy of educating first-generation college students at the 2018 Founders Gala on Saturday, June 2. The gala, now in its fifth year, will be held at 6 p.m. at the Westmoreland Club, 59 S. Franklin St. in Wilkes-Barre. The highlight of the event will be the presentation of the President's Medal to Lawrence E. Cohen '57, chairman and chief customer advocate at Benco Dental. Two Wilkes University juniors are translating their classroom experience into a production credit with audio book giant Audible. Nicholas Filipek of West Wyoming, Pa., and Luke Modrovsky of Mountain Top, Pa., will be working with Etruscan Press author Aaron Poochigian as he produces his debut novel-in-verse, Mr. Either/Or. Poochigian will be at the University from March 27- 30.

Wilkes University and Neumann University, Aston, Pa., have partnered on an articulation agreement for students pursuing a doctor of pharmacy degree. A reception and a book signing, sponsored by the Barnes & Noble Bookstore, will follow the reading. Mr. Either/Or is a verse novel melding American mythology, noir thriller and classical epic in language. Etruscan Press is a partner of the Maslow Family Graduate Creative Writing Program at Wilkes University, where the press is housed. The creative program and Etruscan formalized the on-campus affiliation in 2005.

Wilkes University Students Participate in International Community Service During Alternative Spring Break

Eighteen Wilkes University students participated in community service internationally during their recent spring break. The trips were organized under the University's alternative spring break program. Alternative spring break offers students an opportunity to perform community service while experiencing a different culture and developing their leadership, teamwork and critical thinking skills.

Wilkes University Participates in Red Flag Campaign to Raise Awareness of Intimate Partner Violence

Wilkes University is painting the campus red during the month of March to raise awareness about intimate partner violence. The three-part Red Flag Campaign culminates from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 22 in the Henry Student Center lounge with the event "Colonel's Know Their Flags." Students, faculty and staff will wear red to display unified support in raising awareness. Students will also have the opportunity to obtain more information and resources on dating violence, sexual assault and stalking, and share who they honor by wearing red.

The Sordoni Art Gallery is proud to present its "Art in Context" Lunchtime Lecture series. This series was developed to provide an opportunity for interdisciplinary dialogue inspired by our current exhibition, The Bones of Us Hunger for Nothing by artist Angela Fraleigh. Nicole Pezzino, an assistant professor in the Nesbitt School of Pharmacy at Wilkes University, has been named a 2018-2019 Faculty Scholar by the National Association of Chain Drugstores Foundation. Pezzino is one of only five faculty from across the country selected for the program.

The Wilkes University history department will host the second annual Wyoming Valley Undergraduate History Conference on Feb. 21. The conference will take place from 4-7 p.m. in the Cohen Science Center, 140 S. River St., Wilkes-Barre. The conference features research presentations by 11 students from four colleges and universities. In addition to Wilkes, participating schools include Kings College, Marywood University and University of Scranton. The conference is free and open to the public.

Local girls entering grades 7 and 8 are invited to explore the world of science at Wilkes University with Women Empowered by Science (WEBS). Registrations are being accepted for the summer camp which will run from July 22-28. The WEBS Summer Camp gives students the opportunity to investigate many areas of science through hands-on laboratories and activities. WEBS camp participants will address scientific questions, acquire essential laboratory skills, and develop important critical-thinking skills by working directly with Wilkes University faculty, staff and students on a variety of scientific projects. The camp is $275 with need based scholarships available.

Wilkes Names Jonathan Drach as New Head Football Coach

As the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Hobart College, Jonathan Drach was instrumental in leading the Statesmen to six Liberty League Conference championships, seven NCAA playoff appearances (two Sweet Sixteens/one Elite Eight) and three consecutive undefeated regular seasons. Drach will now run his own program as the new head football coach at Wilkes University.

Religion and Public Policy is Focus of Feb. 27 Lecture at Wilkes University

Religion and public policy will be the focus when the lecture, "The Religious Freedom Restoration Act, the Culture Wars and Where We Go from Here" is presented on Tues., Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. at Wilkes University. The lecture will be delivered by Marci A. Hamilton, one of the United States' leading church and state scholars and a Fox Family Pavilion Distinguished Scholar in Residence at the University of Pennsylvania. The event will take place in the Ballroom of the Henry Student Center, 84 W. South St., Wilkes-Barre and is free and open to the public. The lecture is sponsored by Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science honor society, and the Wilkes University political science department.

Rodney Ridley, executive director and distinguished professor at the Allan P. Kirby Center for Free Enterprise and Entrepreneurship at Wilkes University, was named a Pennsylvania Acceleration Educator of the Year by the Pennsylvania Acceleration Project. Ridley was honored for advancing technology, technology-infrastructure and workforce training across Pennsylvania. The award was presented at the first-ever Pennsylvania Accelerator Awards, held Jan. 18 at East Stroudsburg University.

Wilkes University AFROTC Cadet Kaitlynne Young Earns Commission at Dec. 4 Ceremony

Wilkes University senior Kaitlynne Young of Hawley, Pa., was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force during a Dec. 4 ceremony. The commissioning ceremony was held in the ballroom of the Henry Student Center. Young, who will graduate in January with a degree in accounting, earned her commission through the University's Air Force ROTC Detachment. After graduation, she will be stationed at Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, Texas, and will serve as an Air Force Intelligence Officer.

Wilkes University Public Safety Department Hosts Active Shooter Training For Area Law Enforcement

The Wilkes University Department of Public Safety is hosting over 40 officers from three states to attend a four-hour course addressing civilian response to active shooter situations. The training will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday, Dec. 8 in the ballroom of the Henry Student Center, 84 W. South St., Wilkes-Barre. The course is designed as a train-the-trainer seminar, allowing attendees to share their knowledge across police departments and in their communities.

The Wilkes University Chamber Orchestra will present a concert of music of Mozart and Grieg on Dec. 4, at 8 p.m. in the Dorothy Dickson Darte Center for the Performing Arts, 239 S. River St., Wilkes-Barre. The concert will be conducted by John M. Vaida, adjunct faculty in the conservatory at Wilkes University. Tomorrow's entrepreneurs will have a chance to pitch their best business ideas as 60 high school students compete in the Wilkes University Entrepreneurial Experience on Nov. 30. The students are competing - not for business capital - but for scholarships to attend Wilkes. The competition will be held in the ballroom of the Henry Student Center, 84 W. South St., from 9 a.m. - 1:15 p.m. Each student on the winning team will be awarded scholarships of $1,000 per year, for four years at Wilkes University.

Wilkes University alumnus Bo Ryan, former University of Wisconsin head men's basketball coach and 1969 Wilkes graduate, was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame on Sunday, Nov. 21. The 2017 Induction Celebration took place at the Arvest Bank Theatre at the Midland in Kansas City, Missouri.

Wilkes University Choral Ensembles will join with the Arcadia Chorale to present Christmas Joy: Music for Chorus, Brass and Organ on Saturday, Dec. 2 and Sunday, Dec. 3. Saturday's performance will be held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 35 S. Franklin St.,Wilkes-Barre, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday's performance will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 550 Madison Ave., Scranton, at 3 p.m. Tickets are $15 general admission, $12 for seniors and WVIA members and free for students.

Nearly 250 veterans, students and guests will gather at Wilkes University on Nov. 14 to participate in the 6th annual Heroes Brunch for Veterans. It will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the ballroom of the Henry Student Center, 84 W. South St., Wilkes-Barre. The attendees represent military who have served in conflicts from World War II to the Gulf War.

Wilkes University senior Jennifer Borton of Harding, Pa., was awarded the Sam Milazzo Volunteer of the Year award by the Greater Pittston YMCA. The award was presented on Nov. 8 at the 2017 Greater Pittston YMCA Annual Dinner and Community Awards ceremony at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs.

Wilkes University Screens "Gerrymandering", Hosts Panel Discussion with League of Women Voters on Nov. 28

Wilkes University will screen the 2010 documentary "Gerrymandering" on Nov. 28. Sponsored by the political science department at Wilkes University and the Wilkes-Barre Area League of Women Voters, the film explores the history of redistricting in the United States by both major political parties when drawing legislative maps. The screening begins at 7 p.m. in Breiseth Hall, 137-159 S. Franklin St., in room 107. A panel discussion with professor of political science, Thomas J. Baldino Ph.D., along with representatives from The the League of Women Voters and Fair Vote will follow the film.

Wilkes University Students Are Game-Show Hosts in "Clash of the Colonels" on Nov. 9 and 16

Wilkes University communication studies students are becoming game-show hosts on Nov. 9 and Nov. 16 as they produce their own minute-to-win-it style television program, "Clash of the Colonels." Students enrolled in the communication studies class "Broadcast Production" are creating and recording their own 30-minute game show to be broadcast on WilkesNow, the student-run television station. It will be the first program to be recorded in the television studio since the opening of the Karambelas Media and Communication Center.

Winter intersession at Wilkes University offers quality education at an affordable price, with an added bonus for summer classes. Winter intersession classes have reduced tuition rates of $520 per credit. For the first time, students who enroll also will receive an additional $25 off per credit for courses taken in summer 2018. The discount will be applied after summer registration. Winter intersession offers an accelerated path of study with all online courses.

Nicole Pezzino, Pharm. D., an assistant professor of pharmacy practice in Wilkes University's Nesbitt School of Pharmacy, was awarded the Ten Under Ten Award at the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association Annual Conference.
