Wilkes University Awards New Study Abroad Scholarships
Wilkes University awarded a new scholarship for students planning to study abroad. The Dr. Joseph Donald Stephens, DDS Global Scholars Award provides students with a $5,000 scholarship to pursue their education in another country.The scholarship was established by Panos Kalaritis, a member of Wilkes' Class of 1977, and his wife, Deborah Stephens Kalaritis, Wilkes’ Class of 1978, in honor of her father, who is a Wilkes alumnus.
Ana Castillo is a nursing major with a double minor in Spanish and women’s and gender studies. She will begin her study abroad experience on June 17, traveling to Spain for a six week program to complete her Spanish minor and improve her Spanish language skills in healthcare terminology. She is a bilingual student considering a career in translation in addition to nursing. The trip will take her to Malaga, Barcelona, Lisbon and Madrid. Castillo is from Hazleton, Pa., and expects to graduate in 2018.
Dillon Davis began a two month internship on May 15 at Southampton University in England. He will be attached to a Ph.D. student project for Dr. J. Arjuna Ratnayaka, whose lab studies retinal pathophysiology with a focus on age-related macular degeneration. Davis is a biology major interested in pursing a Ph.D. in molecular biology or genetics to focus on Alzheimer’s disease. Davis is from Curwensville, Pa., and expects to graduate in 2019.
