Wilkes University Holds Summer Commencement Ceremony on September 11
Wilkes University will hold its summer commencement ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 1 p.m. in the Arnaud C. Marts Sports and Conference Center. University President Patrick F. Leahy will preside at the ceremony and present diplomas. The commencement address will be delivered by Jeffrey Stratford, associate professor of biology at Wilkes, and the recipient of the 2016 Carpenter Award for Distinguished Teaching. The University will award 373 bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees, with more than 150 of the degree recipients attending the ceremony.
Stratford is an ornithologist whose research focuses on a variety of environmental and other factors affecting avian species. The Carpenter Award is Wilkes’ most prestigious faculty award recognizing outstanding teachers for their impact on the University’s students. Stratford joined Wilkes’ biology department in 2007, where he teaches courses in conservation biology and ornithology and biostatistics. Stratford also serves as the University director of study abroad programs. He holds a doctorate from Auburn University, a master’s degree from Southeastern Louisiana University and a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University.
