Family Business Alliance at Wilkes University Highlights Healthy Communication
The Family Business Alliance at Wilkes University will host Patricia Mikelson and
George Brown, the third- and fourth-generation family team of the Highlights for Children
publishing company, on Wednesday, Aug. 26. Mikelson and Brown will present “Highlights
of Healthy Communication in the Family Business.” The presentation will discuss the
evolution of Highlights’ communication plan and ways for family businesses to lay
the framework for a healthy communication process. The event will be held in the Henry
Student Center Ballroom, 84 West South Street, on the Wilkes campus. Registration
begins at 8:30 a.m. with a light breakfast. The hour-long program starts at 9 a.m.
The granddaughter of Highlights’ founders, Mikelson is the family and company historian and archivist and is responsible for shareholder relations. She manages the company’s Family Fellowship program, teenage summer intern program, and the development of history books for employees and family members. Prior to this role, Mikelson managed two sales organizations for Highlights and developed internal communications and public relations functions. Before joining Highlights in 1996, she worked in economics, human services and grant writing. She has served on the Highlights board of directors and is a trustee of the family voting trust.
Brown is a fourth-generation family member and manager of Publishing Technologies at Highlights for Children. In this role, he focuses on implementing strategy around tools and processes for efficient workflow and content creation. He has held several positions within the company, including editorial work, product development and working at a subsidiary, Staff Development for Educators. He holds a master of business administration degree and a master’s degree in special education. He acts as an adjunct for the family voting trust and property management group responsible for caring for the family homestead, which is used as a retreat center by the company and the Highlights Foundation.
