Wilkes University Honored by NEPA Rainbow Alliance at Annual Awards Gala

Wilkes University was honored by the Northeast Pennsylvania Rainbow Alliance with a Rainbow Award at the 2015 Rainbow Awards Gala, held on April 25 at POSH at The Scranton Club. The annual awards gala recognizes individuals and organizations that have helped to make northeast Pennsylvania more inclusive of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

Among the initiatives identified in honoring Wilkes were:

  • the University’s Safe Space Program, which provides education and promotes an inclusive student community on campus,
  • Safe Space Ally and LGBT Awareness training provided to Wilkes faculty, staff and students,
  • and the University’s hosting of Rainbow Alliance group meetings and events on campus.

In addition, the award lauded the University’s Center for Global Education and Diversity and the student-run Wilkes Gay-Straight Alliance for co-sponsoring a three-part film series with the Rainbow Alliance in spring 2014. The Gay-Straight Alliance also hosted a symposium of area gay-straight alliances that allowed high school and college students to gather on campus to discuss projects, network and express their needs. Wilkes University has also reserved and staffed a table at Pridefest since 2012.

The NEPA Rainbow Alliance is the region’s largest LGBT+ community organization. Formed in 2004, the alliance provides education, support and advocacy for LGBT+ individuals and families while working to advance fairness and equality.
