Why Study Special Education at Wilkes?

Our curriculum builds on foundational knowledge of special education and explores prevention and early intervention strategies, individual learning differences, and the legal requirements and procedures essential for safeguarding student health and welfare. After completing this program, you’ll be well-prepared to take on leadership roles within your district or to implement best practices in serving diverse learners in your classroom.

What Will You Learn as a Special Education Student?

  • You’ll build a strong foundation of skills to better serve the needs of diverse learners, including how to create an inclusive classroom, intercultural communication techniques, and best practices in accommodations and adaptations in literacy.
  • You’ll discover how to effectively teach special education with courses that explore psychology, curriculum and instruction, technology in the classroom, and relevant issues, laws, and trends in special education.
  • You’ll gain essential course and field experience in special education as well as complete an internship.
  • You’ll explore behavioral management techniques, assessment strategies, and effective practices within the field of special education. You’ll also learn how to understand and apply Family Service Plans (IFSPs), Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), and Section 504 Plans in collaboration with others.

Tuition & Aid

Tuition for graduate programs in education for the 2024-25 academic year is $571 per credit, or $1,713 per course. Deferment is available for employers who reimburse tuition and financial aid is available for those who qualify.

Graduates of our program are prepared with the knowledge, skills, experiences and passion to be more effective teachers. Outside the classroom, educators with advanced training in special education can explore career paths as trainers for school districts, work in clinical settings, or support non-profit programs committed to meeting the needs of those with disabilities.
