The CNSC and CNSC staff will:
- House supplemental AV materials that enhance information learned throughout the curriculum
- Allow for student access to computers and secondary nursing resources
- Provide an area and equipment for students to practice required clinical skills
- Verify a student’s proficiency with required skills prior to that student assuming responsibility for performance of the skill in the clinical setting.
- Be available during regular hours to address student questions related to specific required skills
- Coordinate a student tutoring program for skill practice
- Remediate students who have been identified as having difficulty with specific skills in the clinical setting
- Communicate with course coordinators and clinical faculty regarding skills and skill performance of students
- Coordinate simulated learning experiences that support the goals of clinical simulation
- Serve as a forum for the Nursing Student Organization.
The CNSC is open to students from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Fridays, throughout the Fall and Spring semesters. The CNSC will also be open from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on select Saturdays. These Saturdays will be communicated to students via the course instructor.
The CNSC is closed when students are not in session (i.e. breaks and recesses). The CNSC has limited hours of operation during the summer. The CNSC will be open for additional hours based on staffing. Additional CNSC hours may be scheduled as needs arise and/or as resources allow.
All student time in the CNSC must be scheduled with the CNSC secretary. Scheduling is prioritized by the due dates set for each clinical simulation or skill demonstration throughout the curriculum. Students who wish to utilize the CNSC to practice skills prior to simulations or demonstrations must schedule a practice time with the CNSC secretary. A designated room will be set up with equipment for each upcoming simulation or demonstration two weeks prior to the scheduled due date. Practice sessions can be self-learning time in which there is no instructor present in the room; however, CNSC staff will be available to answer student questions when practices are scheduled during regular CNSC hours. Also, members of the Junior and Senior classes that have agreed to serve as tutors can be scheduled to help with practice. These arrangements are made through the CNSC secretary. There are also regularly scheduled practice times. During these times, a CNSC staff member will guide students in practicing for skill demonstrations and clinical simulations. Attendance at these regularly scheduled practice sessions must be scheduled with the CNSC Secretary. Please note that these practice sessions do NOT take the place of the assigned preparatory work.
- Sign-in to and out of the CNSC using the designated sheet at the secretary’s desk.
- Use books, equipment and AV materials in the CNSC. Items cannot be borrowed or removed from the CNSC.
- Use computers for nursing and other academic purposes. Computers are not for personal
or non-professional use.
- Schedule appointments for all practices, clinical simulations and skill demonstrations
with the CNSC secretary.
- Respect the priorities of the CNSC when scheduling appointments.
- Employ self-learning strategies using CD-ROMs and CNSC resources to practice required
skills. If preferred, a student may also schedule a tutor to assist with practice
sessions or attend regularly scheduled practice sessions.
- Be prompt and prepared for all appointments.
- Complete all clinical simulations and skill demonstrations successfully by the scheduled
due date. It is recommended that students do not wait until the due date to schedule
appointments so that rescheduling can be done if emergencies arise.
- Schedule remediation of skills with the CNSC secretary in a timely manner.
- Respect the privacy and schedules of others at all times while in the CNSC.
Procedure for completing a clinical simulation or skill demonstration on CNSC
- Visit the CNSC secretary in the CNSC to schedule your skill demonstrations and practices. Phone
and email appointments are not accepted. Remember that you should schedule your appointment
for a date prior to the due date.
- Watch all of the required sections on your CD-ROM. These requirements are listed in
the CNSC prep packet that you receive with your course syllabus and are posted on
- Read any required pages or chapters related to the skills you will be performing. These

- Come to the CNSC and watch any required videos. These requirements are listed in the
CNSC prep packet that you receive with your course syllabus and are posted on WebCT.
- Schedule a self-learning practice time in the CNSC so you have a chance to familiarize
yourself with the manikins and/or equipment you will be using. Remember that practice
sessions are self-paced, but CNSC staff is available to answer questions for you if
you schedule yourself during normal CNSC hours. If desired, arrange with the CNSC
secretary to have a tutor assist you with the practice session or to schedule yourself
for a regularly scheduled practice session with the CNSC staff.
- Arrive for your appointment on time.
- If you are unable to make a scheduled appointment, you must call the CNSC to cancel
and reschedule. **
- Be prepared to complete the clinical simulation or skill demonstration with no coaching
or prompts. We understand that you may be nervous and do allow for that in evaluation
of your knowledge and skills.
- If you are not successful, you will be asked to complete remedial work and make an
appointment for another attempt. It is recommended that you schedule this next appointment
with a different CNSC staff person or faculty than the original. A student who does
not successfully complete a clinical simulation or skills demonstration on the second
attempt will fail that simulation/demonstration and the appropriate clinical instructor
and Level Coordinator will be notified.
- Failure to successfully complete a clinical simulation or skills demonstration prohibits the student from performing identified skills in the clinical setting and will result in a clinical failure. When this failure occurs prior to the tenth week of a course, the student will withdraw from the course (This is in accordance with university policy).
**Remember: Failure to successfully complete a skills demonstration by the due date will result in a loss of five (5) points on your next written exam, as per the written agreement from your student handbook.
If an emergency arises that prevents you from making the deadline, you must call the CNSC director at 408-4075 and your Course Coordinator. Failure to do this will result in the five (5) point deduction. Excuses for missing simulations and demonstrations must be deemed valid by both the CNSC Director and the Level Coordinator.
