Dr. Alves was appointed Dean of the Jay S. Sidhu School of Business and Leadership at Wilkes University in 2011 following nearly fifteen years as the Allan P. Kirby, Jr., Distinguished Professor of Free Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, Chair of the Department of Entrepreneurship and Leadership Studies in the Jay S. Sidhu School of Business and Leadership, and Director of the Allan P. Kirby Center for Free Enterprise and Entrepreneurship at Wilkes University. Prior to joining Wilkes University in 1997 he was President of Vergason Technology, Inc., a small, rapidly growing technology-based company named to the “Fast-Track 500” as one of the 500 fastest growing private companies in the United States. From 1983 to 1996 he was a principal in three new ventures and worked in corporate development at Corning Inc. in the areas of architectural product development and flat panel (LCD) glass development.

As Assistant Professor of Finance and Entrepreneurial Studies at Babson College from 1978 through 1983, Alves developed and taught the capstone courses for one of the first entrepreneurship undergraduate majors and graduate concentrations in the U.S. At the Allan P. Kirby Center and Wilkes University Alves led the development the Entrepreneurship major and minor; a unique year-long 1st year course in which students plan a venture in the first semester and then run the business in the second; and a number of service based programs designed to promote entrepreneurship and self-determination. He is a Sam M Walton Free Enterprise Fellow and advises the thirteen-time Regional Champion Wilkes University Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Team. In 2012 he was named to the SIFE Hall of Fame for Sam M. Walton Free Enterprise Fellows.

Dr. Alves earned his B.S. from the U.S. Air Force Academy, M.B.A. from Southern Illinois University and Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts. He is the author of numerous books and professional articles related to small business failure, entrepreneurship, small business management, and management and entrepreneurship pedagogy. In addition, he is active in supporting economic development in Northeastern Pennsylvania through several loan committees and as a member of the Scranton Enterprise Center and Innovation Center at Wilkes Barre Boards of Directors. An active member of the US Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE), he served as Program Chair, Vice President-elect and Vice President of the Individual Entrepreneur Division, Vice President for Finance, Vice President for Divisions, Vice President Programs-elect, Senior Vice President Programs, President-elect, President and Immediate Past President. In 2012 he was elected as a Justin Longenecker USASBE Fellow for his commitment to entrepreneurship education. He has represented USASBE on the Board of Directors of the International Council for Small Business (ICSB) and currently serves as President.
