Wilkes began wrestling at the varsity level with the 1946-47 season.
Since that time, the Colonels have established themselves as one of the top wrestling teams in the region. Wilkes has posted an overall dual match record of 672 wins, 329 losses and 11 ties in their 60 years on the mats, good for a .669 winning percentage.

The Colonels have won a record 14 Middle Atlantic Conference team championships. The team’s greatest achievement came during the 1974 season when they captured the NCAA Division III national championship. After winning the title, the Colonels moved to the Division I ranks, where they remained for 25 seasons, before returning to the Division III ranks in 2000.

Wilkes wrestlers have also had their share of individual success. Ten wrestlers have garnered individual national championships, while 50 Colonels grapplers have earned All-American status. Also, 87 wrestlers earned top-six places, including eight first-place finishes, at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association championships while the Colonels were competing at the Division I level. Since returning to the Division III ranks, Wilkes had six individuals claim MAC titles in a seven year span from 1999 through 2006 before moving to the Metropolitan Conference for the 2006-07 season.
