Starting his 26th year as head coach of the Colonels men's soccer program is Phil Wingert. With a career mark of 237-201-36, Wingert is the winningest coach in Wilkes soccer history. Thirteen times his teams have registered double figure victories with the 1991 team setting a school record with 16 wins.
Wingert has guided the Colonels to the post-season in 11 of the last 17 years, winning the ECAC Southern Division championship in 1990, the MAC Northeast Division title in 1992 and a share of the MAC Freedom League title in 1997. In 2004 he earned Freedom Conference Co-Coach of the Year honors after leading Wilkes to a conference playoff berth. Last season's squad also earned a Freedom Conference playoff berth and fashioned a 12-6-1 mark.
A graduate of SUNY-Cortland with a degree in Physical Education and a Master's Degree in Athletic Administration from Virginia Tech, Wingert was an assistant coach at Virginia Tech before taking over at Wilkes.
Along with coaching soccer, Wingert is the Associate Athletic Director at Wilkes, a position he assumed in July of 1998. Prior to that he spent six years as the Athletic Director at Wilkes.
Wingert, his wife Antoinette, daughter Laura Marie, and son Robert reside in Wilkes-Barre.
Neil Unternahrer, Assistant Coach
Neil Unternahrer begins his first season as a member of the Wilkes men's soccer coaching staff. Unternahrer is a 2007 graduate of Moravian College where he earned his bachelor's degree in Business Management.
While at Moravian Unternahrer was a four-year standout perform on the soccer field for the Greyhounds. A starter in 71 of the 72 matches that he appeared in during his collegiate career, he finished his four seasons with nine goals and nine assists from his midfield position. Unternahrer was the leading scorer for Moravian as a freshman when he knocked home six tallies and contributed one assist. He followed that up with three goals and two assists as a sophomore to earn a berth on the All-Commonwealth Conference second team. Unternahrer would earn second team All-Commonwealth Conference accolades as a junior as well when he finished with three assists.
Unternahrer, who served as a volunteer for both the Bethlehem Boys and Girls Club and the Boy Scouts of American Inner City Children "Scout Reach", is pursuing his MBA degree at Wilkes.
Mike Bridy, Assistant Coach
Bridy is in his first season as a member of the Wilkes men's soccer coaching staff after enjoying a stellar four-year career as a member of the Colonels squad. A team captain for two seasons, he is a 2007 graduate of Wilkes with a degree in Business.
Bridy was a starter during each of his four seasons and played in 72 matches during that span. He accumulated 13 goals and dished out 16 assists from his midfield position. Bridy earned first team All-Freedom Conference honors as a junior in 2004. After missing the 2005 season due to an injury, he returned to the pitch last season and garnered a berth on the All-Freedom Conference second team. Bridy was also a second team All-Freedom Conference selection as a sophomore.
Last season Bridy played an integral role in helping Wilkes post a 12-6-1 overall record by scoring three goals and handing out three assists. He also keyed the Colonels run to their third conference playoff appearance in his four seasons.
