Year in and year out the Wilkes University football team...
has been regarded as one of the best in the Middle Atlantic Conference.
During the 2006 season Wilkes claimed the Middle Atlantic Conference championship and posted a perfect 10-0 regular season mark. The Colonels also earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III playoffs and finished with a record of 11-1. The Colonels earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Division III Championship field in 2006 after registering an 8-2 record during the regular season. The 1993 was also invited to the NCAA playoffs after posting a perfect 10-0 record during the regular season and claiming the Middle Atlantic Conference championship.
During five of the past eight seasons Wilkes has garnered a berth in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference playoffs, winning the Southwest title in 1999 and the South Atlantic crown in 2002. All in all, the Colonels have made nine post-season playoff appearances in the last 14 years.
The 2006 and 1993 seasons marked the first perfect campaigns that the Colonels had enjoyed since the mid 1960's. The 1966, 1967 and 1968 Wilkes squads each finished with perfect 8-0 records. The 1966 and 1968 teams were awarded the Lambert Bowl, which is given annually to the top small college football team in the East. Wilkes also posted a perfect 6-0 record in their first season of play in 1946.
Wilkes players have had their share of individual honors bestowed on them as well. Running back Brett Trichilo, a 2005 graduate, claimed the Melberger Award, given annually to the top Division III player in the nation, in both 2003 and 2004. Wilkes players have earned All-America honors 49 times, while 55 Colonels have been named to the All-ECAC team. Additionally, 232 Wilkes players have been named to the All-Conference team since 1957.
