As Isadora Duncan once said, "What one has not experienced, one will never understand in print."
This philosophy exemplifies the mission of the office of Cooperative Education & Internships -- to help you hone your education with hands-on experience.
Cooperative education is a process that formally integrates a student's academic studies with productive work experiences in professional settings. The word "cooperative" is used to mean a mutual relationship between the employer and the University. The important thing to remember is that students (you) reap the benefits of this relationship.
What are the advantages of a co-op or internship? Students in the program are able to:
-
- see the relationships between course work and actual jobs,
- meet potential employers,
- gain employment references,
- establish relationships with mentors,
- use high-tech laboratory and computer facilities,
- gain entry into companies that interest them,
- improve job prospects, and
- gain academic course credit.
