There are more than 800 graduates of the Wilkes University Upward Bound program.
 We want to hear from all of you so please update us on how you are doing.  Please contact us via e-mail.

Alumni Board Meeting
October 15, 2013

1. Meeting was called to Order at 6:15 P.M.
2. July minutes were reviewed and approved3. Staff Reports

A. Sarah:
• Senior Retreat – Students signed up for SAT’s and ACT’s, presentation about scholarship search and college application process, question and answer session wrapped-up student concerns
Senior Meeting – All but two students had their “Senior Meeting”. During meeting, students narrowed down school search to 5-6 schools to apply to and discussed major of study
• Fee Waiver – College Board waivers received to cover student application fees that range from $35-$75 each
• Fall Semester Training – Sarah will be attending PHEAA Counselor’s Day at LCCC on November 5th and PACAC College Counseling 101 training at University of Scranton on October 25th
• LCCC College Fair – Juniors will attend a college fair at LCCC on Thursday, October 17th
• Financial Aid Night – Seniors and parents will have a Financial Aid night with Wilkes University Director of Financial Aid, Joe Alaimo, on Thursday, November 14th
• LCCC Speaker – Seniors will hear a speaker from LCCC Admissions Office on Thursday, November 21st to inform them on programs of study and transferring opportunities at LCCC

B. Dawn:
• Attended annual TRIO Conference in State College from October 16th-18th. Liliya Palashchuk, Upward Bound graduate, was the recipient of a $500.00 TRIO Scholarship
• Outreach was wrapped-up at the following high schools: Meyers, Holy Redeemer, Nanticoke, Coughlin, Northwest, WVW, Pittston, GAR, and Hanover. Received 9 applications so far. We currently have 33 seniors and 48 juniors. Looking to accept 44 sophmores.
• Wachovia Arena donated 20 tickets for the students to see a hockey game on November 6th
• Tutoring going well. UB graduates are available Monday through Thursday from 4:00P.M. to 6:00P.M. Tutors are utilizing the Work Study Program
• Open House – November 3rd at 1:00P.M. in the Stark Learning Center. Alyssa Connor will be present to talk to students about her experience. Alumni are welcome
• Summer in Winter – Saturday, January 11th from 9:00A.M. to 8:00P.M.. Alyssa Connor has volunteered to help

C. Patti:
Resigned; waiting on President’s cabinet approval to hire a new person

4. Treasury Report
• Checking -  $1797.19
• Savings as of Sept. 30 -  $1505.05
• March CD -  $1000
• Tom J. Scholarship -  $172.17

5. Committee Reports

A. Fundraising Committee
• Wine Trip – postponed due to bus problems
• Camden, NJ trip – priced too high
• Renting a Movie Theater – brought movie to Wilkes instead

B. Scholarship Committee
• Done until 2014

C. Membership
• Jenn Earley voted in as a member

D. Student Interaction
• No Ice Cream from Hillside for summer program this year – did movie night instead
• Suggestion to have Alumni board at their own table to help students during college fair
• Friday afternoon with alumni during the summer

6. Activities
• Celebration of Achievement on Thursday, August 1
• Fall semester starts in September
• Junior Seminar, alumni meet with students in January

7. Old Business
• Movie for summer done
• Vision statement – on hold until Shawn meets with Bloomsburg alumni
• Students picked up trash around campus and river as part of a Community Service Project
• Advice Books (Gabbi) went out during graduation
• Shawn is getting certified in First Aid and CPR as an instructor. Can use this to help certify summer staff.
• Knoebels trip for alumni, possibly next year
