Wilkes University’s new major in sports and event management allows students to develop expertise required for a successful career in the sports and event industry.
This program is designed for students interested in business careers involving sporting events, concerts, conference center event planning and theatrical productions. Students will learn skills to plan, analyze and operate a sports- or event-centered entity.
Students may also enhance their primary major through the sports and event management minor. Certain electives will enhance the knowledge of event management for students in other disciplines, such as communications, education, biology, pre-medicine and theatre. This can increase their marketability in areas such as TV and radio production, video analysis, film editing and coaching skills, college and high school athletic directing, sports medicine and event planning.
Internships and Careers
Students within the sports and event management major are required to complete an internal internship with a Wilkes University entity such as the athletics department or the Darte Center for Performing Arts, in addition to an external internship. The internal Wilkes internship experience, coupled with small classes and strong programmatic emphasis on mentoring, should give Wilkes students an edge in competing for internships with potential employers.
Students in Wilkes’ Jay S. Sidhu School of Business and Leadership have been offered internships with businesses such as the Pocono Dome; Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins; and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders baseball team, the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Yankees.
The degree in sports and event management can help prepare students for careers in managing athletic and performing arts facilities, sports medicine, coaching, directing athletics, event planning and communications.
