This rare opportunity to complete a student teaching placement abroad is offered to student teachers of Wilkes University through the generosity of
Sri Utama International School in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Each spring, the undergraduate Teacher Education Program selects six lucky student teachers to study abroad for half of their student teaching experience at Sri Utama in beautiful KL, the capital city of Malaysia.
Thanks to the generosity of Sri Utama, students receive free lodging, meals and airfare while being afforded the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in a diverse educational environment. Mentored on-site by Malaysian cooperating teachers and Associate Professor of Education
Dr. Gina Zanolini Morrison, who accompanies the student teachers for the entire placement, these six students teach in an exciting, international, English-speaking venue.
The first cohort of student teachers, in 2012, visited beautiful Terengganu, historic Malacca, and exciting Singapore, where they presented at the International Problem-Based Learning Conference. They visited the elephant sanctuary and the rainforest jungle, celebrated Chinese New Year, and experienced the Hindu festival of
Thaipusam at breathtaking
Batu Caves.
Two of those six have accepted positions at Sri Utama and are teaching there now, and a third Teacher Education graduate has accepted a position there beginning in January 2013. Meanwhile, the next cohort of student teachers is preparing to go abroad during the spring semester of 2013.
Malaysia is a multicultural nation adjacent to Singapore in the heart of Southeast Asia, where English is widely spoken. No visa is required for American citizens to enter Malaysia, and travel to neighboring countries is relatively inexpensive. For more information, please contact Dr. Morrison at
