Entrepreneurship

Be Your Own Boss.

Students in the Entrepreneurship major of the Jay Sidhu School of Business and Leadership will be taught to create and recognize opportunities, to develop opportunities, to act on opportunities, to create value, and to give back to society. As a Sidhu student, you begin this process in your freshman year when your team conceptualizes, designs, and operates your own business. Your exposure to business tasks builds during the next three years and culminates with your completion of a senior internship.

The Sidhu School faculty have designed a program

to enhance the development and nurturance of emotional intelligence and leadership potential in our undergraduate students, based on the faculty’s own experiences with the qualities of a successful businessperson. Dr. Jeff Alves, Wilkes’ endowed professor of Free Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, has been involved in the launch and growth of five start-up companies; as an entrepreneur he has been immersed in nearly every area of managing a business.

Entrepreneurship students have the opportunity

to become involved with Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE), a non-profit organization that encourages students to apply classroom learning to real-life situations. The student teams teach such topics as entrepreneurship and personal finance through educational outreach projects.

The Secret Shopper Program is a service-learning project in partnership with the University’s Small Business Development Center, where student teams evaluate customer service, atmospherics, and other aspects of client organizations.

Recent Wilkes graduates are already becoming successful entrepreneurs. Erica Micheliga is the founder/owner of Atmosphere Day Spa and Salon; she has been honored by the Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Business and Industry, the NE Business Journal, and the local newspaper, and her spa was recently chosen by MTV for a new reality show (filming begins soon). Tony DelRegno is an independent film director and producer, while Eric DeForest, who earned both his undergraduate and MBA at Wilkes, owns and operates Benchmark Fitness Equipment in Florida.

The Entrepreneurship program is nationally accredited

by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).
