Tips for a Healthy Holiday Season
Return to The Family Corner - December 2010
Cold and flu season is rapidly approaching for our students at Wilkes University. Living in a community setting, as our students do, the likelihood of spreading germs tends to be higher. Encourage your sons or daughters to wash their hands frequently, cover their mouth when they cough or sneeze and make a conscious effort not to share drinks, cigarettes, and utensils and face towels of other students.
Encourage them to get a flu shot as soon as possible! As of the end of November, we do not have any confirmed cases of the flu on campus. This year’s flu shot protects from the seasonal flu and the H1N1 virus. Flu shots are available at the Heath and Wellness Center, Passan Hall for a fee of $20.00. We also have a full laboratory service through Pennant labs at the Health Services to do rapid flu tests, quick strep tests or any other blood work that may be needed to diagnosis the student’s health issues. All lab tests will be processed through your students insurance. Students can get over the counter medications, such as Motrin, Tylenol, cough medicine, free of charge at the Health Services.
On the weekends, when the Health and Wellness Center is closed we encourage students to utilize the Urgent Care @ Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre for minor conditions such as cold, flu, earaches, cuts etc. The address is 25 Church Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA, phone 570-808-3181. Hours on the weekends are 9 am to 3 pm both days. It is approximately 2 miles from campus.
If there are any health concerns or questions, please feel free to call the Health and Wellness Center at 570-407-4734 and we would be happy to answer your questions.
Have a happy and healthy holiday season!
