MUS 100-401. APPLIED PERFORMANCE ONE CREDIT OR TWO CREDITS Instruction offered in all keyboard, band and orchestral instruments, guitar and voice. Individual instruction. For non-music and music majors. Each area conducts a weekly master class for discussion and performance. Participation is required. Additional fees apply. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. MUS 101. INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC I THREE CREDITS The materials of music and their interrelationships. Illustrations are derived from literature of all periods for the purpose of developing understanding and enjoyment through perceptive listening.
MUS 103 COMPREHENSIVE MUSICIANSHIP I FIVE CREDITS This course presents an intensive study of the properties, elements, and fundamental materials and structures of musical composition by means of the performance, analysis, and discussion of exemplars drawn from the repertoire of Western and non-Western cultures and the creation and performance of original works based on these exemplars. A degree requirement for all applied performance and music education majors.
MUS 104. COMPREHENSIVE MUSICIANSHIP II FIVE CREDITS A continuation of MUS 103: Comprehensive Musicianship I, this course provides intensive study of the techniques and small forms of musical composition as studied through performance, analysis, discussion, and emulation of exemplars drawn from the repertoire of Western and non-Western cultures. A degree requirement for all applied performance and music education majors. Prerequisites: MUS 103. Corequisite: MUS 110.
MUS 108, 207-208. HISTORICAL ANALYSIS OF MUSIC I-III THREE CREDITS A degree requirement. In-depth studies of the historical evolution of musical styles, antiquity to the present, through class lectures, analysis of the literature, and performance practices. Corequisite: To be taken in sequence with Comprehensive Musicianship and Harmonic Foundations (for all Music majors) or consent of instructor.
MUS 110. MUSIC, THE ARTS, SOCIETY AND IDEAS THREE CREDITS As the first course in the music history sequence, this course presents a multicultural study of music in the context of the humanistic tradition. A degree requirement for all applied performance and music education majors.
MUS 121. WILKES CIVIC BAND ONE-HALF CREDIT Large symphonic band and small wind ensemble experience. The Wilkes Civic Band presents a minimum of two concerts per year with programming focusing on standards of the band repertoire, which may include contemporary and non-Western literature for large symphonic band. Students acquire and refine skills in the areas of reading musical notation, good tone production on his/her chosen instrument, and precision in all aspects of musical performance appropriate to a large instrumental ensemble setting. Degree requirement for all Music Education majors and all Applied Instrumental majors. Membership open to all members of the University and surrounding community.
MUS 125. UNIVERSITY CHORUS ONE-HALF CREDIT Large mixed choral ensemble experience. The University Chorus presents a minimum of two concerts per year with programming focusing on standards of the choral repertoire, which may include contemporary and non-Western literature for large mixed chorus. Language selection is diverse. Students acquire and refine skills in the areas of reading musical notation, vocal production, and precision in all aspects of musical performance appropriate to a large choral setting. Degree requirement for all Music Education majors and all Applied Voice and Keyboard Performance majors. Membership open to all members of the University and surrounding community.
MUS 126. CHAMBER SINGERS ONE-HALF CREDIT Membership is limited to a small group of selected singers who learn and perform solo and ensemble pieces from the literature of opera, operetta, and musical theatre.
MUS 127. JAZZ ENSEMBLE ONE-HALF CREDIT Open to all members of the University community, by audition. The ensemble rehearses and presents performances of literature encompassing a wide range of jazz styles and techniques.
MUS 128. CHAMBER PERFORMANCE ONE CREDIT Participation required of all applied performance majors for a minimum of three semesters. Students will study and publicly perform chamber literature appropriate to their instruments. Coaching and supervision by faculty members, as assigned. Prerequisites: MUS 200, junior standing, or consent of instructor.
MUS 131. UNIVERSITY ORCHESTRA ONE-HALF CREDIT Open to all members of the College community, by audition. The orchestra performs concerts throughout the year of chamber and symphonic literature. Participation is required of all string applied performance and string music education majors.
MUS 203. COMPREHENSIVE MUSICIANSHIP III FIVE CREDITS A continuation of MUS 103 and MUS 104: Comprehensive Musicianship I and II, this course provides intensive study through performance, analysis, discussion, and emulation of polyphonic techniques and contrapuntal procedures of musical composition in the Western tradition from the eleventh through the eighteenth centuries. A degree requirement for all applied peformance and music education majors. Prerequisites: MUS 103, MUS 104, MUS 110. Corequisite: MUS 210.
MUS 204. COMPREHENSIVE MUSICIANSHIP IV FIVE CREDITS A continuation of MUS 103, 104, and 203: Comprehensive Musicianship I-III, this course provides intensive study through performance, analysis, discussion, and emulation of harmonic vocabulary and compositional techniques of musical composition in the Western musical tradition, eighteenth through the twentieth centuries. Styles and traditions of non-Western cultures will be studied as they influenced the Western musical tradition. A degree requirement for all applied performance and music education majors. Prerequisites: MUS 103, MUS 104, MUS 110, MUS 203, MUS 210. Corequisite: MUS 211.

MUS 210. MUSIC HISTORY I: ANCIENT THROUGH BAROQUE THREE CREDITS An intensive study of the history of music and the genres, styles, and forms of the stylistic periods of musical composition, Ancient through Baroque, and the movements, eras, and themes associated with these periods. This course is designed to introduce the student to the discipline of musicology (including methodology and techniques of investigation) as it relates to music of the Ancient World, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Baroque era. Emphasis will be placed on musical traditions of the Western world; styles and traditions of non-Western cultures will be studied as they influenced the Western musical tradition, especially in music of the Ancient World, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance. A degree requirement for all music education majors. Prerequisites: MUS 103, MUS 104, MUS 110. Corequisite: MUS 203.
MUS 211. MUSIC HISTORY II: CLASSICAL THROUGH TWENTIETH CENTURY THREE CREDITS An intensive study of the history of music and the genres, styles, and forms of the stylistic periods of musical composition, Classical through the Twentieth Century and the movements, eras, and themes associated with these periods. This course is designed to introduce the student to the discipline of musicology (including methodology and techniques of investigation) as it relates to music of the Classical and Romantic periods and the Twentieth Century. Emphasis will be placed on musical traditions of the Western world and the incorporation of non-Western music into the Western musical tradition, especially in the twentieth century. A degree requirement for all music education majors. Prerequisites: MUS 103, MUS 104, MUS 110, MUS 203, MUS 210 or consent of instructor. Corequisite: MUS 204.
MUS 212. KEYBOARD ACCOMPANYING TWO CREDITS A study of the techniques concerned with solo, chamber, and group accompanying. Required of all keyboard applied performance majors. Prerequisites: MUS 101, MUS 103-MUS 106.
MUS 213-215. ACCOMPANYING PRACTICUM I-III ONE CREDIT Practical accompanying experience, as assigned. Minimum time allotment is five hours per week of studio, chamber, or group accompanying, plus public performance accompanying when required. Prerequisite: MUS 212.
MUS 259. VOICE DICTION TWO CREDITS An intensive study of the phonics of English, French, German, and Italian languages, based upon the International Phonetic Alphabet. Practical application is achieved through song literature selected from all historical periods. Required of all voice performance and choral music education majors.
MUS 298. TOPICS THREE CREDITS A study in topics of special interest not extensively treated in regularly offered courses.
MUS 305. COMPOSITION AND ORCHESTRATION TWO CREDITS Practical exercises in composition, orchestration, and arranging for instruments and voices in all combinations, including orchestral, wind, jazz, and chamber ensembles. Required of all Applied Performance majors. Prerequisites: MUS 206 and 208.
MUS 306. 20TH CENTURY THEORY TWO CREDITS A survey of twentieth-century theoretical systems emerging from post-romantic and impressionistic to post-serial and avant-garde styles of the contemporary times. Emphasis will be on compositional techniques. Works and writings of Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Hindemith, Babbitt, Sessions, Messaien, Boulez, and others will be examined. Listening and analysis. Required of all Applied Performance majors. Prerequisites: MUS 204, 206 and 208, junior standing, or consent of instructor.
MUS 307-316. MUSIC PEDAGOGY THREE CREDITS A survey of the techniques and methodology concerned with individual teaching of each applied idiom. Required of all applied performance majors. MUS 361. CHORAL CONDUCTING AND SCORE READING THREE CREDITS An intensive study of the techniques and organizational skills required of the choral conductor, in grades 7-12, and the application of musicianship skills in the vocal ensemble performance medium. Practical application of techniques and skills is offered in the weekly one-hour Music Education Chorus read-through sessions. A degree requirement for all applied performance and music education majors.
MUS 362. INSTRUMENTAL CONDUCTING AND SCORE READING THREE CREDITS An intensive study of the techniques and organizational skills required of the instrumental conductor, in grades 7-12, and the application of musicianship skills in the vocal ensemble performance medium. Practical application of techniques and skills is offered in the weekly one-hour Music Education Band or Orchestra experience. A degree requirement for all applied performance and music education majors.
MUS 395-396. INDEPENDENT RESEARCH ONE TO THREE CREDITS Independent study and research for advanced students in music under the direction of a staff member. A research paper at a more substantial level beyond a term paper is required. Prerequisite: Approval of department chairperson.
MUS 399. COOPERATIVE EDUCATION ONE TO SIX CREDITS Professional cooperative education placement in a private/public organization related to the student's academic objectives and career goals. In addition to their work experience, students are required to submit weekly reaction papers and an academic project to a Faculty Coordinator in the student's discipline. (See page 52 in the Bulletin for placement procedures.) Prerequisites: Sophomore standing, 2.0 cumulative average, consent of academic advisor, approval of placement by department chairperson.
MUS 407-415. MUSIC LITERATURE THREE CREDITS An examination of the literature, its style and technical problems, studied through performance coaching. These courses are designed to give the student a comprehensive knowledge of the literature for each respective major area of performance. They will provide a necessary foundation for performance practice requirements beyond the scope of only a lecture approach. Sections are offered in the following areas: MUS 407.
