The Teaching Commons at Wilkes University– a Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning
The Teaching Commons was established to support excellence in teaching and to promote creativity and collaboration. The Teaching Commons supports continual improvement and professional development for faculty, and will play an integral part in Wilkes University’s commitment to student-centered learning.
The Teaching commons can assist faculty with the integration of technology and new teaching methods into their established curriculum. The Commons can provide faculty with the knowledge and resources needed to use instructional technology effectively and will offer a variety of training workshops throughout the year.
While there will be two or three scheduled training workshops offered each semester, Dr. Burnside will create and deliver training sessions for departments and/or individuals. Just submit a training workshop request form.
The Teaching Commons can provide training on Using PowerPoint effectively, copyright and creative commons issues, and emerging technologies for teaching. The Commons can also insights for promoting active learning with classroom applications such as interactive whiteboards, SMART classrooms, and clickers.
The focus of the Teaching Commons is to facilitate the constant improvement of teaching for our faculty and enhancement of learning for Wilkes students.
While some workshops teach emerging technologies and web applications, the Teaching Commons training workshops emphasize teaching first.
Workshops are designed to engage faculty from all disciplines and all technological skill levels.
