At about twenty five to forty five majors, the Wilkes University Theatre undergraduate experience is similar to that of a repertory company. Our small size encourages collaboration and allows us to offer opportunity in an intimate setting. We keep in touch with our students and assist them with curricular and co-curricular choices each semester with a policy of required advising.
Wilkes University Theatre presents a full season of dramas and musicals on the main stage as well as a season of student produced black box productions at the Darte Center at Wilkes University.
As part of the Division of Performing Arts (Joseph C. Dawson, Chairperson), “WUT” has built a reputation of fine work with plays such as Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Carousel” to original world – premiere plays such as “Le Revue Fairy Tale” as well as rarely produced works such as Philip Barry’s “Hotel Universe” and Wertenbaker’s “For the Love of the Nightingale”.
WUT is Wilkes-Barre’s premiere venue for contemporary as well as historic theatre and is where local audiences will find great productions in their own backyard. Wilkes University Theatre’s mission is to produce the best in theatre as part of their ongoing educational mission to train the best actors, dancers, designers and singers from the area and beyond.
With a dedicated staff and spirited students, Wilkes University Theatre demands the highest quality production values, bringing audiences in the area new works as well as well-loved standards with artistry in performance, directing and design.
WUT provides opportunities for theatre artists to develop their skills in a caring and well-equipped atmosphere. Working with Wilkes University’s music and dance programs, Wilkes offers students great training in the arts. As with any theatre company, WUT is deeply invested in the local community’s ongoing cultural revitalization and enthusiastically contributes work to the ever increasing theatre-going public.
