HHMI funds have allowed us to expand a popular science program for middle school-age girls. Now entitled HHMI-WEBS (Women Empowered by Science), this program takes place on one afternoon each month during the academic year, but also includes a separate two-week day camp during the summer.
In both programs, students participate in interdisciplinary science exercises in the Wilkes science laboratories including:
Biology
Chemistry
Physics
Pharmaceutical science
Environmental science
Computer science
These hands-on laboratory and field exercises, each directed by a team of Wilkes faculty, staff, and students, emphasize the sheer fun and the process of discovery in science. HHMI grant supports an even greater diversity of activities during the day camp and provides need-based stipends for those that require it. A central goal in both of these programs, in addition to inspiring and motivating young women to consider careers in science, is to strengthen our support and service to the region’s growing Hispanic population.
