Constitution of the Wilkes University Student Chapter of the ASME
Article 1: Name The name of the society shall be Wilkes University Student Chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
Article 2: Purpose To encourage academic and social activities among all Wilkes University students especially among Mechanical Engineering and other engineering students at the university.
Article 3: Membership Membership will be open to all students of Wilkes University.
Article 4: Officers and Duties
President
Shall preside over all meetings.
Shall act as coordinator of all chapter’s activities.
Shall appoint committees and delegate responsibility.
Shall vote only in case of a tie.
Vice President
Shall assume president's responsibilities in his/her absence.
Shall publicize the chapter’s activities and correspond with other clubs.
Secretary
Shall keep accurate minutes of all meetings.
Shall correspond with other clubs in conjunction with the vice president.
Treasurer
Shall keep accounts and current records of chapter’s finances.
Article 5: Nomination and Election Procedure
Office positions shall be limited to ASME members who have been active members of the chapter for more than one semester.
Nominations for offices shall take place at the end of the spring semester.
Elections shall take place after nominations, with voting rights granted to all members except graduating seniors.
New officers assume their responsibilities one week after the election.
Article 6: Recall of Officers
Registered members may propose petitions for removal of officers. These petitions must make specific accusations against the officer.
Removal of any officer shall require a three-fourths vote of active chapter members.
Article 7: Vacancy of Office
Should the office of the president become vacant, the vice president will take charge until a new president is elected.
Should any other office fall vacant, the president shall appoint an active chapter member to temporarily assume office.
Nomination and election for permanent office shall take place at the next immediate meeting, with the newly elected officer taking immediate responsibility for that office.
Article 8: Meetings and Dues
Meetings shall occur twice a month at a time voted upon at the beginning of each previous meeting.
Chapter dues shall be non-mandatory, and shall be considered as a personal contribution to the chapter's treasury.
Article 9: Amendments
Amendments may be proposed by one-forth of the chapter membership and considered the chapter as a whole.
Passage shall be voted upon by a three-fourths majority of the chapter membership and be presented to the Student Government for approval.
If an amendment is not approved by the Student Government, the amendment shall be revised voted upon and resubmitted. Upon acceptance by the chapter and by the Student Government, the amendment will be accepted as part of the chapter’s official constitution.
Article 10: Advisor's Role
Advisor informs the officers of their responsibilities.
Advisor serves as custodian of all permanent chapter records.
Advisor forwards all general correspondence to the officers.
