River Water Quality Monitoring

Water Quality in the Susquehanna River

For several recent years, YSI sondes were stationed along the Susquehanna River and its tributaries under the direction of Dr. Dale Bruns.  The sonde, powered by solar energy, collected water quality parameters, which were transmitted electronically across a wireless network to a computer that displayed the information on a map.

Results from YSI monitoring on the river
•  pH was between 7-8 with little variability.
•  Chloride reflected winter use of road salt.
•  Dissolved oxygen inversely tracked temperature
•  Total dissolved solids and chloride were diluted by runoff.
•  Fecal coliforms and nitrates were correlated and both were positively correlated with flow indicating CSO effects.
