Wilkes University/Medicine Shoppe PGY1 Community Pharmacy Residency Program 
 
This is a 12-month residency designed to prepare the resident for positions in advanced community pharmacy practice. The Wilkes University/Medicine Shoppe residency is jointly accredited by ASHP and APhA. The program will provide the resident with training experiences in advanced community practice patient care, community outreach, academia, and clinical research. The resident is appointed to the College faculty and will develop skills in didactic and experiential teaching through active involvement in our residency teaching certificate program and direct experiences in a variety of teaching environments.  

A longitudinal ambulatory care experience is also incorporated to assure proficiency in actively managing patient’s drug therapy.  The resident will have the opportunity to manage a variety of patient care programs including diabetes education, immunizations, cardiovascular screenings, smoking cessation, MTM, and a hypertension clinic.    
 
Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy, established in 1993, is an independent pharmacy located in Dallas, Pennsylvania.   Owner Gary Karwaski partnered with the University in 2004 to develop health and wellness programs at the pharmacy.   Dr. Julie Olenak, a faculty member at Wilkes University, has been the clinical pharmacist at the Medicine Shoppe for seven years.
 
The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy is located approximately 10 miles from the University. Wilkes University is an independent institution with approximately 5,000 undergraduate and graduate students located in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, within 2 hours driving distance of New  York City and Philadelphia.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Graduated from an ACPE accredited School of Pharmacy with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree.
  • Candidates must be eligible for licensure in Pennsylvania. Please note that Pennsylvania requires new graduates seeking licensure to have 1500 hours of pharmacy experience.  Only half of these hours can come from experiences in the pharmacy curriculum.  Many students obtain the additional 750 hours through internship experiences. To be eligible to apply for this program the candidate must have all 1500 hours met before the start of the program(July 1, 2012) to be considered eligible for licensure. Further information can be obtained by contacting the Pennsylvania State Board of Pharmacy.
  • Residency applicants must complete a program application along with a letter of intent, curriculum vitae, official college transcripts, and three completedrecommendations.
  • Onsite interview is required and communication skills will be assessed.
  • The program participates in ASHP Resident Matching Program and all applicants must be enrolled in the National Matching Service(NMS) to be considered for the position.
