William G. McGowan Scholars Program 2009-2010 The Sidhu School of Business and Leadership will select one undergraduate student to be the “ William G. McGowan Scholar”. The William G. McGowan Scholar will be awarded a tuition scholarship at Wilkes University up to $18,000 for the academic year 2009-2010.

Purpose:

To recognize academic achievement and excellence of performance of students majoring in business.

 Encourage leadership ability, interpersonal skills, and significant involvement in academic, campus and community activities.

Reward excellence of character and other exemplary qualities including intellectual curiosity, a spirit of innovation and entrepreneurial potential.

Increase the awareness of the contribution made by William G. McGowan, founder and Chairman of MCI Communications Corporation, to the fields of business, telecommunications and entrepreneurship.

Eligibility:

Undergraduate students must be a full-time business major and obtain at least a 3.0 GPA.

Application Process and Requirements:

The student must be a currently enrolled, full-time declared primary major in undergraduate Accounting, undergraduate Business Administration, or undergraduate Entrepreneurship in the Sidhu School of Business and Leadership at Wilkes University.  

The student must have achieved junior standing and expressed intent to spend the next academic year in the Sidhu School. William G. McGowan Scholarship funds may not be transferred to another academic institution.

The student must have an overall grade point average of at least 3.0.

The student shall not have or subsequently receive any other scholarship award that, when combined with the William G. McGowan Scholar Award, would provide a benefit greater than his or her tuition and fees.

The student must submit an application form, current resume, and two essays (please refer to the William G. McGowan Scholars Program Guidelines page in this packet for more details on the two essays). The essay shall include a cover page that specifies the name of the college or university, the student’s name, campus address and home address as well as phone numbers at both addresses. Please have your essays checked with the writing center and with a full time faculty member (faculty sponsor) prior to submission.

The student must submit one recommendation letter for this award by at least one full-time member of the Sidhu School faculty (faculty sponsor).

The William G. McGowan Scholars Award Committee of the Sidhu School will make the final decision.

The student must continue in his or her major for the duration of the scholarship.

Finalists will be selected for interviews with the Sidhu School McGowan Scholarship Selection Committee.

All application material must be submitted to the Personal and Professional Development office, 3rd Floor Weckesser Hall by 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 3rd. In addition to becoming the Sidhu School McGowan Scholar for the academic year, the Award recipient will be asked to plan with the Dean of the Sidhu School and the Director of Leadership Development on a community service project that in the spirit of the William G. McGowan Scholars Program gives back to the Northeastern Pennsylvania community
