Tom Buckler pitched five solid innings and Kyle Follweiler cracked four hits and drove in five runs to lead Wilkes University to a 14-5 non-conference baseball victory over Moravian College on Thursday afternoon at Artillery Park.
The Colonels won their fourth consecutive game to improve their overall record to 14-9. Moravian saw their overall mark slip to 11-14.
Buckler allowed only four hits and one unearned run to even his mound record at 2-2. The sophomore struck out eight and walked only one. Matthew Swartz allowed five runs in three innings with five strikeouts for Moravian. The loss dropped Swartz to 1-3 on the season.
Follweiler had a double and homerun among his four hits and also scored three times. Geoff Miller, who homered, Brad Woznisky, who had a double and triple, and Mike McAndrew, who doubled, had two hits apiece for the Colonels. Wilkes also received a solo homer from Chris Mayerski.
Brad Bodine had two doubles among his three hits to lead Moravian at the plate. Kevin Gambrino had a homerun and single, while Scott Brady drove in a pair of runs with a double for the Greyhounds.

Wilkes University ripped 24 hits off seven different Misericordia University pitchers en route to a 19-6 non-conference baseball win over the Cougars on Tuesday afternoon at Artillery Park. The win improved the Colonels to 13-9 overall, while Misericordia saw their overall record fall to 8-15.
Al Clocker pitched three scoreless innings of relief ball for Wilkes to claim his first collegiate decision. Brandon Gehm, who got the start for Misericordia, suffered the loss after lasting one and two-thirds innings and surrendering six hits and five runs to fall to 1-1.
Randy Dengler had four hits, including three doubles, and drove in five runs to pace the Wilkes offensive assault. Mike McAndrew contributed four singles and scored three times. Kyle Follweiler had a single, triple and homerun, while also driving in four runs and scoring five times. Chris Mayerski had three hits, including a triple, and was credited with three runs batted in.
Mike D’Amara, Jamie Phillips and Keith Davison had three hits each for Misericordia. Two of Davison’s hits were doubles, while Phillips had one double among his hits.

Wilkes University pushed across five runs in the top of the ninth inning to erase a 5-2 deficit on their way to a 7-5 Freedom Conference baseball win over King’s College in the rubber-game of their three-game series on Monday afternoon at Betzler Fields.
The Colonels improved to 12-9 overall, and more importantly, evened their conference record at 5-5. King’s saw their overall record fall to 11-10, and their conference record slipped to 5-7.
Wilkes had only two hits heading into the ninth inning before mounting their rally. King’s reliever Mark Yankowski came on to start the frame and walked Geoff Miller. After striking out Eric Wetzel, Andrew Garofoli drew another walk to put runners on first and second. Billy Sisko slapped a single that scored Miller and made it 5-3.
Yankowski was lifted for Eric Matula, who immediately gave up a single to Mike McAndrew that scored Garofoli to cut the deficit to 5-4. Kyle Follweiler then hit a ball that was misplayed in the infield allowing McAndew to reach third and Sisko to cross the plate with the tying run. Corey Helfrich kept the rally going with a single that scored McAndrew and put Wilkes ahead, 6-5.
Chris Mayerski would draw a base on balls that loaded the bases and ended the day for Matula. However, John McNichol walked the first hitter he faced, Randy Dengler, to force home another run and up the Colonels lead to 7-5. Matula would get out of the jam by striking out the next two hitters he faced, but the damage had already been done.
King’s scored single runs in the second and third inning to jump on top. Jeremy Bonser had an RBI-single in the second inning, while a Wilkes error allowed a run to score in the third and gave the Monarchs a 2-0 edge.
Wilkes cut the lead to 2-1 in the sixth when Mayerski was able to work a bases loaded walk to force home a run. But, King’s also plated a run in the sixth on a single by J.R. Graver that pushed the lead back to two runs, 3-1.
After the Colonels closed within a run, 3-2, with an unearned run in the eighth, King’s scored twice in their half of the frame to take a 5-2 lead. Both runs scored on a two-run double by Jon Venarchick.
Anthony Giuffrida, who was also the winning pitcher in Sunday’s 1-0 win over the Monarchs in the second game of the series, pitched three innings and allowed three hits and two runs to gain the win and improve to 4-0. Matula, who surrendered two runs and two hits without getting a hitter out, suffered the loss to move to 1-2.
Helfrich had two of the five hits for Wilkes in the contest. McAndrew, Sisko and Dwight Smith finished with a single each.
Matt Livoy and Matt Unger had three hits apiece for King’s, which finished the game with 15 hits as a team. Graver, Gracjan Kraszewski and Bonser chipped in with two hits each.

Geoff Miller raced home following a wild pitch for the only run of the game to lift Wilkes University to a 1-0 win in nine innings over King’s College in game two of their Freedom Conference baseball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Artillery Park. The win enabled the Colonels to garner a split of the twinbill after they suffered a 2-1 loss in the opener.
Wilkes saw their overall record move to 11-9 and their conference mark increase to 4-5 following the two games. King’s is now 10-10 overall and 5-6 in the conference. The two squads will play the final game of their three-game series on Monday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at Betzler Fields.
Wilkes’ Corey Helfrich and King’s Dan Jenkins were outstanding as the starting pitchers in the second tilt. Helfrich pitched eight innings and gave up only six hits with eight strikeouts. Jenkins went seven innings and surrendered six hits, while fanning seven.
Anthony Giuffrida pitched the ninth inning for Wilkes and set the Monarchs down in order to improve his record to 3-0 on the mound.
The Colonels would break through for the only run in the bottom half of the ninth. King’s reliever John McNichol was able to retire the first two Wilkes hitters before running into trouble. Geoff Miller singled and Al Clocker drew a walk to move Miller to second.
The Monarchs called on Aaron Deroba to come in, however he uncorked a wild pitch that allowed both runners to advance a base. Deroba then walked Kyle Follweiler to load the bases for Corey Helfrich. Deroba fired another wild pitch and Miller was able to slide safely home to give Wilkes the 1-0 wini.
Follweiler had the only two extra-base hits in the game with a pair of doubles for Wilkes. Matt Unger had two of the six hits for King’s.
In game one, the Monarch’s Matt Livoy and Wilkes’ Tom Buckler were also impressive on the hill. Livoy improved to 3-3 after giving up only four hits and striking out nine in going the distance. Buckler (1-2) also tossed a complete game and allowed eight hits, while striking out four.
King’s took a 1-0 lead in the second when Unger launched a one-out homerun to left-center field.
Wilkes answered back in the third to knot the contest at 1-1. Helfrich tripled with two outs, and following a walk to Chris Mayerski, he was able to trot home on a single by Brad Woznisky.
King’s would push across the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth inning. J.R. Graver led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Livoy. Jon Venarchick laced a single to right field that allowed Graver to score, giving the Monarchs a 2-1 edge.
Graver and Gracjan Kraszewski had two singles each to pace King’s offensively. Wilkes was led by Woznisky, who also had a pair of singles.

Marywood University pushed across nine runs in the sixth inning to break open a close game en route to a 20-15 non-conference baseball win over Wilkes University on Thursday afternoon at Artillery Park. The win improved the Pacers to 8-6 overall, while the Colonels saw their record slide to 10-8 overall.
Jeff Cleary (2-1) picked up the pitching win for Marywood in relief of starter Joe Valvano. Cleary went three innings and allowed three hits and five runs. Wilkes starter John Paul Palmer (1-2), who went two innings and surrendered six runs and three hits, was tagged with the loss.
Marywood had 18 hits in the contest. Joe Diskin had three singles and a double and scored four times for the Pacers. Jason Lane, who homered, had three hits. Matt Newcomb added two hits, including a homerun, and drove in six. Jason Bugno, who also homered, and Shane McAndrew chipped in with two hits and three RBI’s apiece.
Wilkes finished with 14 hits as a team, including a double and homerun from Kyle Follweiler. Randy Dengler contributed a single and homer. Dwight Smith drove in three runs with a single and double, while Brad Woznisky and Mike McAndrew had a single and double each.

FDU-Florham scored a 16-8 baseball win over Wilkes University in a Freedom Conference game on Wednesday afternoon. The win improved the Devils to 9-8 overall and 4-3 in conference play, while the Colonels saw their overall record slide to 10-7 and their conference record move to 3-4.
John Mineo was the winning pitcher in relief for FDU-Florham. Mineo went three innings and allowed only one run and three hits. Wilkes starter Justin Huff, who was tagged for 10 runs and 12 hits in four innings of work, suffered the loss on the hill.
Dan Pregno led the Devils offensively with four hits, two runs scored and a run batted in. Matt Oliveto finished with a pair of doubles for FDU-Florham, while Jimmy Sheppard added a homerun.
Wilkes was paced by Chris Mayerski, who had a double and homerun, scored three times and drove in a pair of runs. Geoff Miller had a single and homerun for the Colonels. Jordan Padams contributed two hits, including a double, and two runs batted in, while Kyle Follweiler and Corey Helfrich had two hits each.

Billy Sisko hit a solo homerun to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth inning and Jordan Padams launched a two-run shot later in the frame to lift Wilkes University to an 11-9 win over Keuka College in game one of their non-conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Artillery Park.
The Colonels would post an 11-2 win in the nightcap to conclude the sweep and improve to 10-6 overall. The Storm saw their overall record fall to 2-10 with the two losses.
Keuka would take a 9-8 lead in the top of the eighth inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by Stefan Gallucci that plated Alex Paquette. However, Wilkes would rally when Sisko drilled a one-out shot that evened the count at 9-9. Then, after a single by Eric Wetzel, Padams stepped to the plate and cracked his walk-off homer to provide the Colonels with the victory.
Anthony Giuffrida pitched two innings and allowed three hits and one run to improve to 2-0 on the mound for Wilkes. Craig Pittinger, who went the final three and one-third innings for Keuka, suffered the loss to move to 0-2. He gave up seven hits and four runs.
Padams had three hits and drove in three runs to lead a 17-hit Wilkes attack in game one. Corey Helfrich had three hits, including a homer, and drove in two runs. Kyle Follweiler also had three hits including a triple, while Brad Woznisky added a pair of doubles. Chris Mayerski contributed a homerun and three RBI’s for the Colonels.
Keuka had 14 hits in the opener, including three doubles and two runs batted in by Paquette. Matt Schaffer had three hits, one of those a double, and drove in a pair of runs, while Mike Marah had three singles for the Storm.
In the nightcap, John Paul Palmer and Shawn Ward limited Keuka to just two singles in the Wilkes win. Palmer went the first three innings and gave up one single and two runs. Ward pitched the final four frames allowing no runs and one hit to earn the win. Josiah DelGrosso, who allowed 10 hits and eight runs in four innings, fell to 0-2 with the loss.
The Colonels equaled their game one output with 17 hits in the nightcap. Follweiler had two singles and a triple for Wilkes, while Geoff Miller had three hits, including a double, and two runs batted in. Mayerski had a single and double, and Padams slapped a pair of singles as well. Sisko chipped in with a two-run homer and Andrew Garofoli drove in a pair of runs with a triple.
Mike Perrone and Greg Stevens had the only hits in the contest for Keuka.

Wilkes University split a Freedom Conference baseball doubleheader at Arcadia University on Saturday afternoon, winning the opener 7-2, but dropped a 5-4 verdict in the nightcap.
The split moves the Colonels to 8-6 overall and 3-3 in conference play as they prepare to host Keuka College in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Artillery Park. Arcadia, who also fell 9-6 to the Colonels in game one of their three-game series on Friday, is now 5-13-1 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
Corey Helfrich was outstanding in picking up the win in the opener for Wilkes. He tossed a complete game and allowed only four hits. Helfrich, who improved to 2-1 on the hill, struck out 10 and gave up only a pair of seventh inning runs. Mike Ramsden (2-1) was tagged for six hits and four runs in six innings of work to take the loss for the Knights.
Mike McAndrew had three hits and drove in two runs to key Wilkes at the plate. Dwight Smith added two hits and two runs batted in for the Colonels, who scored three runs in the second inning to take the lead for good.
A double by Arcadia’s Andy Bella was the only extra base hit of the game. John Curreri, Tim Smith and Austin Ley added a single apiece for the Knights.
In game two, Ley’s one-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Anthony Champi as Arcadia rallied for two runs in their last at-bat to notch the one-run victory.
Steve Chobert (1-1) was the winner on the mound for the Knights, scattering five hits over seven innings. Brad Woznisky (0-2) allowed only eight hits but suffered the loss for the Colonels.
Ley had a single and double and drove in a pair of runs for Arcadia. Bella also finished with a single and double and drove in one run. A triple by Ken Spangenberg and a double by Kevin Kolodgie were the other extra base hits for the Knights.
Eric Wetzel, who doubled, and Billy Sisko had two hits each for Wilkes in the nightcap. The only other Colonels hit was a single by Helfrich.

Kyle Follweiler drilled a two-out, three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the tenth inning to propel Wilkes University to a dramatic 9-6 Freedom Conference baseball win over Arcadia University on Friday afternoon at Artillery Park.
The Colonels improved to 7-5 overall and evened their conference record at 2-2 with the victory. Arcadia slipped to 4-12-1 overall and 2-2 in the conference. The two teams will conclude their three-game series on Saturday when they square off in a doubleheader in Glenside at 1:00 p.m.
Wilkes held Arcadia scoreless in the top of the tenth. Billy Sisko would lead off the Colonels half of the inning with a pinch-hit single. After Dwight Smith executed a sacrifice bunt to move Sisko to second, Knights’ hurler Tim Smith threw a wild pitch allowing Sisko to advance to third. However, Smith was able to strike out pinch-hitter John Paul Palmer for the second out. Arcadia then opted to intentionally walk Mike McAndrew to place runners on first and third, leaving Smith, a left hander, to face the left-hand hitting Follweiler. Follweiler delivered with a shot that clear the fence in right-center field and provided the Colonels with the win.
Arcadia held a 2-0 lead thanks to sol homers by Smith in the first and John Curreri in the fifth. However, Wilkes battled back when Corey Helfrich launched a two-run homer in the home half of the fifth to even the game at 2-2.
The Colonels scored three times in the seventh inning to take a 5-2 advantage. All three Wilkes runs came courtesy of a two-out, bases loaded triple by Chris Mayerski.
The Knights bounced right back and scored four times in the eighth inning to forge in front 6-5. The big blow in the inning came off the bat of Nick Goetz, who cracked a three-run homer that gave Arcadia the lead.
With one out in the ninth inning Smith was called on in relief for Arcadia. Follweiler and Helfrich both singled and Mayerski drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Brad Woznisky hit a slow roller to second that plated Follweiler and tied the game at 6-6. But, Smith was able to induce Andrew Garofoli into a fly ball that ended the threat and sent the game to extra innings.

Buckler went the first eight innings and allowed nine hits and six runs, five which were earned. Smith, the third of three Arcadia hurlers, fell to 0-3 after giving up four hits and four runs in one and one-third innings of work.
Follweiler had three hits and scored three times to lead an 11-hit Wilkes attack. McAndrew, who also scored three times, and Helfrich added two hits each.
Goetz had three of the 10 hits for Arcadia. Smith and Curreri chipped in with two hits apiece for the Knights.

The University of Scranton got a solid pitching performance from Tim Reiser en route to a 10-5 non-conference baseball win over Wilkes University on Wednesday afternoon at Connell Park. The victory improved the Royals to 7-5 overall, while the Colonels saw their overall mark slip to 6-5.
Reiser pitched seven innings and allowed only seven hits. He did surrender four runs during the stint, but only one was earned as he improved to 2-0 on the mound. Wilkes starter Frank Sokola lasted two innings and was tagged for three hits and six runs, only four which were earned, to slip to 1-1.
Justin Champagne paced Scranton at the plate with three hits, including a homerun. Champagne drove in a pair of runs and scored twice. Chris Bligh contributed a two-run triple for the Royals, while Chris Psihoules had a double.
Kyle Follweiler was the leading hitter for Wilkes with a pair of doubles. Mike McAndrew and Tom Buchler chipped in with two singles each. Chris Mayerski drove in four of the five Colonels runs, including three with a third inning homerun.

Manhattanville College pushed across runs in each of the first eight innings to score a 13-1 Freedom Conference baseball victory over Wilkes University on Monday afternoon at Artillery Park.
The win improved the Valiants to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference, and secured a win in the season series after the two teams split their doubleheader on Friday. Wilkes saw their overall record slip to 6-4 and their conference mark fall to 1-2.
Frank Albano (1-1) tossed a complete game to garner the win on the hill for Manhattanville. He allowed ten hits and struck out six, while giving up only a ninth inning run. Brad Woznisky (0-1) took the loss for Wilkes after surrendering nine hits and nine runs, only four of which were earned, in five innings of work.
Paul Blejec led the Manhattanville offensive attack with five hits, four runs batted in and four runs scored. Blejec drilled a three-run homer in the second inning and added a run-scoring double in the seventh frame. Stephen Pinto, Chris DelGrosso and Damon Obijiski contributed two singles each for the Valiants.
Wilkes had ten different players with one hit each, including a double by Kyle Follweiler, the Colonels lone extra-base hit. Jordan Padams chipped in with an rbi-single to account for the only Wilkes run.

Corey Helfrich tossed a complete-game six-hitter to lift Wilkes University to a 9-1 win over Manhattanville College and a split of their Freedom Conference baseball doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The Valiants scored seven times in the first inning on their way to a 10-5 win in the opener.
Wilkes, the defending conference champion, saw its record move to 6-3 overall following the first two games of their conference slate. Manhattanville, who was also playing their first conference contests of the year, are now 8-4 overall.
Helfrich allowed only a first inning run before shutting out the Valiants over the last six frames. He struck out nine and walked only one to even his pitching record at 1-1. Donny Alvarez, who was tagged for 10 hits and seven runs in four innings of work, suffered the loss.
Kyle Follweiler had two hits, including a two-run homer, to pace Wilkes at the plate. Helfrich, Andy Garofoli and Eric Wetzel added a single and double each. Chris Mayerski also chipped in with two singles.
A.J. Triano was the only two-time hitter in the nightcap for Manhattanville with a pair of singles.
In game one, John Kain went the distance on the hill for the Valiants to pick up the victory. He scattered six hits over seven innings. Tom Buckler lasted only two and two-third innings on the mound for Wilkes and gave up nine hits and ten runs to garner the loss. Justin Huff came on in relief for the Colonels and pitched three and one-third solid innings, allowing only three hits and no runs.
Mike Mooney had three hits, including a double for the Valiants. Damon Obijiski added a single and double, while Thomas Verrangia chipped in with two singles. Helfrich led Wilkes with two hits.

Wilkes University concluded a successful season-opening trip to Florida by scoring an 18-7 win over Franciscan University on Friday morning at the Cocoa Expo. The Colonels return from their trip with an overall record of 5-2.
Justin Huff, the second of six Wilkes pitchers used in the game, garnered the win to run his record to 2-0. Huff went one and two-third innings and allowed only one hit. Kevin Marrow took the loss for the Barons after allowing eight hits and eight runs in five and one-third innings of work.
Brad Woznisky and Kyle Follweiler led a potent Wilkes offensive attack that banged out 15 hits. Woznisky had three of those hits, including a grand slam homerun in the fifth inning that erased a one-run deficit and put the Colonels ahead for good. Follweiler had two doubles, a homerun, and two runs batted in.
Wilkes also received two triples and five runs batted in from Eric Wetzel. Andrew Garofoli finished with a single and doubles, while Al Clocker chipped in with a pair of singles.
Stephen Jagla was the lone two-time hitter for Franciscan with a pair of singles. Marrow had the lone extra base hit for the Barons, a double.

Freshman Frank Sokola tossed seven solid innings to lead Wilkes University to a 13-2 win over Baruch College in a non-conference baseball game that was called after seven innings due to rain on Thursday at the Cocoa Expo. The win improved the Colonels to 4-2 overall, while Baruch was making their season debut.
Sokola was outstanding in picking up his first collegiate win. He allowed only four singles in the contest and struck out 12 hitters. Greg Polius, who was tagged for nine runs in five and one-third frames, suffered the loss for Baruch.
Chris Mayerski and Brad Woznisky led the Wilkes offensive attack with three hits each. Mayerski had two doubles among his hits and scored three times. Woznisky had one double and drove in three runs. Mike Brennan was credited with a single and double for the Colonels.
Baruch had four different players, Polius, Ronnie Rojas, Juan Adorno and John Avona, with a single each.

Andrew DelRossi tossed three and one-third solid innings in relief of starter Dustin Pflug to gain the mound win for Moravian. Wilkes starter Corey Helfrich took the loss.

Wilkes University upped their baseball record to 3-1 overall by sweeping a doubleheader from Franciscan University (OH) on Tuesday afternoon in Cocoa Beach, Florida. The Colonels notched a 13-1 victory in the opener, before securing the sweep with a 20-4 win over the Barons in game two.
Justin Huff went the distance on the mound in game one for Wilkes. He allowed only three hits and needed only 85 pitches to notch his first decision of the campaign.
Kyle Follweiler had two hits, including a two-run homer in the second inning. Eric Wetzel chipped in with a single and triple. Chris Mayerski blasted a three-run homer in the first frame for the Colonels, while Andrew Garofoli cracked a three-run shot in the second inning.
Corey Helfrich had four hits, including a homerun, and drove in five runs to lead Wilkes to the game-two rout. Dwight Smith also finished with four hits for the Colonels, who had 17 hits as a group. Mayerski and Follweiler finished with a single and a homerun apiece.

The Wilkes University baseball team opened their 2008 season on Monday afternoon by splitting a doubleheader with Moravian College at the Cocoa Expo in Cocoa Beach, Florida.
The Colonels posted an 8-5 win over the Greyhounds in the opener, while Moravian bounced back to claim an 8-7 victory in the nightcap. The Greyhounds are now 5-2 overall.
Tom Buckler pitched five solid innings, allowing only six hits and two earned runs to pick up the pitching victory for Wilkes in game one. Kyle Follweiler pitched the final frame to earn his first save of the campaign.
