Criteria for Selecting Graduate Assistants

1. Regular admission to the program or current student with good academic standing (3.0 GPA or higher)

2. Students admitted under Conditional Classification may apply for an assistantship after completion of nine semester hours of graduate credit with a cumulative average of 3.0 or higher.

3. Completion of Graduate Assistant on-line process

4. Ability and willingness to perform duties outlined in job posting and assigned by the Director/Department Chair of the respective program.

Wilkes University is a small, private institution located in Wilkes-Barre, PA, only two hours from Philadelphia and New York City.  The campus houses 1000 students, with full-time enrollment at 2300. 

Wilkes offers Master’s programs in Business Administration, Creative Writing, Education, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Management, Mathematics, Bioengineering, and Nursing. 
 
An offering of the position of Resident Director is contingent upon acceptance and enrollment to our Graduate School.  Once in the position you must maintain a minimum of a 3.0 GPA overall.
 
Academic Year Responsibilities
  • Supervise an area of undergraduate staff (RAs)
  • Supervise one Resident Staff Advisor (RSA)
  • Facility management of area (documenting & reporting damages and/or repairs that occur in hall)
  • Assist RA staff in promoting student and community development
  • Contribute to the RA Selection and Recruitment process
  • Facilitate in-house room selection process using an online housing system
  • Participate in Student Affairs weekly on call rotation
  • Advise, Committee Organizing Leisure Activities (COLA)
  • Manage Programming Budget of Area
  • Office hours, minimum of 25 hours/week
 
Summer Responsibilities
§ Manage summer housing facilities
§ Supervise summer staff (3-5 Resident Assistants)
§ Assist with summer orientation programs
§ Create developmental programs for summer RA training
§ Contribute to room assignment process
 
Remuneration
  • Furnished 1 bedroom apartment
  • Tuition waiver for up to 18 credits (1st year); 24 credits (2nd year)
  • Stipend of $3500 during academic year; $1000 during the summer months
  • Full University meal plan when Dining Service is in operation
  • Department issued cell phone
