How to Get Around

There are several ways to get around Wilkes-Barre. One of the easiest is walking. Many stores are within walking distance of Wilkes’ campus. Another way to get around is to take the bus. Several public buses travel to the Wyoming Valley Mall and other local areas you may need to visit. For more information about the buses, check out the Luzerne County Transportation Authority’s website: http://www.geocities.com/pennbus1/luzerne/.

Where Not to Go in Wilkes-Barre

As in all cities, there are certain places that are not as friendly or safe as other parts. In Wilkes-Barre, one place to avoid for safety purposes is not far from Wilkes’ campus. Traveling south past Academy Street can be unsafe at night if you are alone.

It is always best to be on the safe side, as Americans say. No matter where you are going in the city, use caution.

If traveling by car, keep the doors locked at all times—while in the car to protect yourself and while not in the car to protect your belongings.

Avoid hitch-hiking. It is not a safe practice, especially if you are female.

Don’t walk alone at night and stay in well-lit areas.

Don’t give money to panhandlers. Always keep a close eye on your belongings, especially your wallet and documentation.
