The Wilkes University women’s soccer team will open their 2007 season on Saturday when they travel to participate in the Cortland Invitational at SUNY Cortland. The Lady Colonels will meet Nazareth College in their opening match at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. They will also then square off with Cortland on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
Head coach John Sumoski will welcome back 11 players from last season’s team that fashioned an overall record of 13-6-1. The Lady Colonels earned berths in both the Freedom Conference and ECAC playoffs in 2006.
Four veterans return at the forward position, including second team All-Freedom Conference selection junior Catherine Simone. Simone was the squad’s second leading scorer last season after tallying seven goals and handing out four assists. Senior Georgina Robinson, who was third on the team with four goals and four assists, senior Rebecca Duttry, who had one goal and two helpers, and junior Lauren Cirilli are also back at forward. Sophomore Julissa Reed and freshmen Kiara Midkiff, Melissa Polchinski and Kaitlyn Swales will also battle for playing time.
Junior Jessica Gannon and sophomore Ashley Deemie are the leading returnees in the midfield for the Lady Colonels. Both players were credited with three goals a year ago. Freshmen Alison Weidman, Deniela Nini and Brittany Ely are also likely to push for time in the midfield.
A pair of second team All-Freedom Conference players, seniors Briana Bertoni and Susie Zavistoski, will anchor the Wilkes defense. Senior Bethany Head, who had one goal and three assists in five matches before seeing her 2006 season cut short by an injury, is also back and will play as a defender. Among the newcomers that will look for time on the field are sophomore Katie Nadeau, and freshmen Kelly Knox, Sammi Wallish, Casandra Valentin and Taryn Hallowell.
Senior Liz Pauly returns after starting all but one match in goal last season. Pauly registered 72 saves and fashioned a stellar 0.89 goals against average with seven wins by shutout. Junior Jessica Berkey, who appeared in three matches and had a 3.04 goals against average, and freshman Anne Miller will provide additional depth at goalkeeper.
