Sharon Bowar, Associate Professor of Art, is exhibiting a comprehensive selection of new paintings at Philadelphia’s Rosenfeld Gallery in the historic district. Opening Sunday September 9, this exhibition is the result of two years of artistic research that began in 2005 when Professor Bowar was a Visiting Artist at The American Academy in Rome, and has culminated in a series of new works completed during her recent sabbatical from Wilkes University. “This sabbatical has been an extremely rich and vital working time for me as an artist.” Bowar said. “I’ve been immersed in the contemplative realms of composing and producing works of art, while tending to the business of positioning the work within a broader critical and cultural context. I’m deeply passionate about the making of art and look forward to sharing my new insights with our students when I return to teaching this fall.”

Bowar’s paintings are allegorical in nature, and deal intuitively with the difficult area of expression relative to ideas that are neither visible nor tangible, such as Peace, Time, Beauty, Truth, Tolerance, and Solitude. New developments in the work include pain-staking applications of 24-karat gold leaf, with a growing interest in non-western pattern and ornament.
