Wilkes University Offers Youth Summer Writing Workshops

Contact: Vicki Mayk

Wilkes University will offer two one-week writing workshops for middle and high school students during the summer 2014 intersession.

The Kids’ Writing Workshop is a half-day camp that cultivates the creative writing skills of students in the fifth- through seventh-grades. Campers will build confidence as writers by participating in imaginative prompts, games and peer sharing. The class will introduce students to the fundamentals of poetry, short stories, screenwriting and playwriting. Campers will also discuss publishing and review the writing process, including brainstorming, drafting and editing. Students should come prepared to write and be inspired. The workshop runs July 14-18 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Class registration closes on July 9 at 12 a.m.

The Write Stuff will help students in the eighth- through eleventh-grades develop and polish their creative writing skills in a non-competitive, supportive environment. Through writing prompts, campers will find their writing voices, develop their ability to write in scenes and discuss the elements of a story. Students will review the writing process, workshop and gain a better understanding of the publishing process. When registering, campers should choose one focus area for mid-morning breakout groups: poetry, screenwriting and playwriting, or fiction. The workshop runs July 21-25 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Registration closes on July 16 at 12 a.m.

Courses will be led by Jaclyn Fowler, managing editor of Etruscan Press, and other alumni and students of the Wilkes University Graduate Creative Writing program. For more information or to register, please contact Joyce Anzalone at 570-408-4547.
