Wilkes University Gregory LeeGreg LeeGregory Lee, a Wilkes University senior electrical engineering student from Newfoundland, Pa., has been named the Wilkes 2014 Outstanding Adult Learner. Lee was honored at the annual ceremony of the Luzerne County Council on Adult Higher Education, held on March 25 at the Wilkes-Barre campus of Penn State University.

In 2009 Lee transferred to Wilkes from Northampton Community College. At the time, he was employed as an electronics technician at Northrop Grumman Corporation while also working in the communications security department at Tobyhanna Army Depot. Despite changes in his work schedule that required considerable travel and overtime, Lee managed to continue his education. He was named to the dean’s list in both the fall 2009 and spring 2010 semesters.

Lee has excelled both in his job and in the classroom, developing methods to repair and test numerous military systems, including communication security devices, aircraft landing systems, and radar.

“Greg has a bright future ahead,” says John Gilmer, Wilkes professor of electrical engineering. “He has familiarity with the real world applicability of what he has been learning as a student, which has made his education that much more valuable.”

Gilmer also noted that Lee serves as an example of what determination and perseverance can accomplish. Lee continues to serve in the U.S. Air Force Reserve with a unit based at McGuire Air Force Base in Trenton, N.J.
