Contact: Vicki Mayk

The Family Business Forum at Wilkes University will host representatives of two of the country’s most well-known and successful family businesses at the forum’s Dec. 4 meeting. Jay Bush, famous bean spokesperson for Bush Brothers & Company, and Christian Frederick Martin IV, chairman and CEO of Martin Guitar Company, will discuss how their families “make it work.”

The event is free and open to the public. It will be held in the Henry Student Center Ballroom on the University’s campus. Registration opens at 5 p.m. with a light reception and the event starts at 5:30 p.m. To RSVP or for more information, please contact Lanie Jordan at meliss.jordan@wilkes.edu or call (570) 408-2120.

Bush is a member of the fourth generation to be involved with the company. He is best known for marketing Bush’s Baked Beans with his talking golden retriever, Duke. He graduated from the University of Tennessee with a degree in logistics and worked for Highway Transport Company and LTV Aviation before joining the family business in 1990. At Bush Brothers, he has worked as a plant manager and served on the company’s board of directors since 2000. He served on the Family Senate from 2006 to 2013, when he was appointed director of the Shoebox Private Trust Company.

Martin is the sixth generation of his family to serve as chairman and CEO of C.F. Martin & Co., a world-renowned manufacturer of acoustic guitars based in Nazareth, Pa. He attended UCLA and apprenticed at Westwood Music, building a classical guitar and learning the retail end of the business, before returning to Pennsylvania to work in his family’s guitar factory. There, he learned more about guitar design and construction and became familiar with different company operations. He served as assistant to the president and then as vice president of marketing before assuming ownership of the company at the age of 30 when C.F. Martin III passed away.
